Watching Slash leave was like a dagger to the heart. But I had to do it. I saw the way he looked at me after Sam said the things he did. I saw the disgust and anger at me. What hurts the most was him moving away from me when Sam was attacking my character. Like he believed the things he said.

I give Ruthie a sad smile as she comes up to me before dodging out of her way. I can't answer her questions right now or explain myself. It all hurts too much.

The day seems to drag on but I keep a fake smile plastered to my face each time someone looks my way, only allowing my facade to drop once they turn away again. Jay comes up to me multiple times, asking where Slash has gone, and my heart breaks even more. I shouldn't have let him close to us, especially Jay.

We sing 'Happy Birthday' to Jay and cut his cake, sharing it around. But I couldn't be more thankful that the day was finally over as I made my way around the park, throwing away all the rubbish and packing leftover food into containers. The old ladies have kept their distance as well, but stay to help tidy up the playground with me, only giving me small smiles when I glance their way. I know they're curious, and maybe Slash has even told them what happened, but they're keeping to themselves.

It only takes 30 minutes to clean up the area with the help of most that came. They all say goodbye to Jay, receiving a bear crushing hug from the birthday boy himself for coming and making it the "bestest birthday ever" in his opinion. I smile and thank them also before lifting Jay into my arms and exiting the playground with him on my hip, talking excitedly about how he can't wait to open his gifts.

"Do you tinks I gots a motorbike mumma?" he asks again, tapping on my shoulder as we near my small car.

"I'm not sure sweetheart, you'll just have to wait and see," I answer, opening the door and sitting him into his car seat.

"Where did Swash go? He not sing the birfday song mumma!" he exclaims, once again questioning Slash's lack of presence.

"I'm not sure hun, maybe he got a bellyache?" I say, buckling him safely in.

"Mm, I hopes not. He said he would take me fishies," he says, clapping his hands, oblivious to the massive bag on toys next to him. Not knowing how to answer his question, I just smile and nod my head, closing his door before jumping into the driver's seat. But the questions don't stop.

"Do you think Swash gots me a present mumma? I thinks he dids! He said he was gunna gets a freakin wicked present!" he says, bouncing in his seat.

"Jay! Language!" I say sternly, eyeing him through the rearview mirror.

"But mumma! Dats what he says!" he shouts, crossing his arms defiantly.

"Slash is a grown man, Jay. You are a child, and I will not accept that language from you, understand?" I say, keeping my eyes on the road as I pull out of the playgrounds carpark.

"Okay mumma, I sowwie!" Jay cries from behind me, a small dog-like whine leaving his lips.

"That's okay, Jay. Did you have fun with your friends today, bubba?" I ask, steering the conversation away from anything 'Slash'.

It worked, Jay started a big speel on every single bit of play equipment he and his friend played on, what they played as, who won and who lost. Somewhere in the middle of his animated one-sided conversation, we arrived home. Quickly I step out of the car and unbuckled Jay, ushering him into our unit.

I stare around at the mess of our home from this mornings nightmare rush and groan internally. I guess a nice relaxing evening with a coffee and a book is out of the question. With a heavy sigh, I set Jay up in his room on the small portable DVD player he got for his birthday and head back out to the chaos. It's fun being a mum!
