In a blink of an eye, Friday came about. The past week she had become confident in her work at the diner, she had become close to a few of the oldies who filtered in during the week. She was yet to have another encounter like the one with the trucker and she couldn't be more thankful. The majority of customers filtering into Ruthie's were polite whilst some weren't outright rude, they still didn't smile or say thanks for their meal. They kept to themselves and I was more than happy to leave them be.
I was happy and content for the first time in years, Jay was happy at his daycare and speaking more every day, I was so proud of my little warrior.
Ruthie was such a kind, old lady, though I'd call her old to her face, she'd probably punch me in the face. I chuckled to myself as I imagined the scenario in my head. She was a strong and proud woman, and she took pride in everything she did. She even had me making some of my mega choc chip cookies after I brought some leftovers in from home. She'd scooped one out of the plastic container and took a massive bite. I remember her eyes widening as she looked at me, causing me to freak out internally that she was about to spit it out and tell me to get out. Instead of spitting it out she had swallowed and grinned at me. "I want you to make a batch of these each morning" she had said and walked out after snatching the container from Jack, leaving him wide-eyed with a mouth full of cookie and 2 full cookies in his hand."Vratss nosh air!" he cried around a mouth full of the cookie.
I shook my head with a grin, patting his shoulder before opening my bag, pulling a ziplock baggie from it full of cookies. I handed them over with a smile. "There you go big man and close your mouth. Even Jay knows it's rude to speak while you eat." I'd exclaimed as he starting kissing the baggie like it contained gold. I giggled at his antics before going back to work.
That was 3 days ago, I'd done as Ruthie had said and the cookies sold like hot fire. She had me baking 2, nearly 3 batches a day, and never once asked for the recipe after I'd told her it was a special recipe I'd created when pregnant with Jay. She'd even given me a raise for making the batches each day.
Now I stood in front of my mirror, spinning left and right, trying to decide on an outfit for my... Is it a date? Well anyway, at this rate I won't be going. I take off the latest choice, a light green floral printed maxi dress I'd had since being pregnant with Jay. I growl in frustration as I open my closet again and pull out the nearest dress. This one is a white strapless dress, coming to my mid-thigh. The top of it hugs my breasts while the rest flows into a rippled skirt. I bite my lip, it's not bad. But is it too plain? I stare intently at myself, trying to find flaws in the dress. I hear the doorbell ring and frown. Who could that be?
I look down again at the dress and sigh. Whatever, I'm pretty sure this is the only other decent looking one I own. I've decided, I'm not going!
I turn away from the mirror and walk out of my room, walking down the small hallway to the front door. I open the door slowly and poke my head around the frame, my eyes widening. What is Ruthie doing here?!
"U-Um, hi Ruthie, what's up? I thought you closed the shop today" I stammer, opening the door wide for her to come in.
She looks me up and down, a small smile gracing her face. "You look beautiful dear, and yes, I did. I'm actually here to pick you up to take you to the clubs party," she says, making me raise my brow.
"Why, I have my car. I could have gone by myself." I ask, walking into the house again. My home is only a small two bedroom unit. The kitchen and loungeroom join in the middle, swapping from tiles to the carpet. It's not much, but it's home. I hear scuffling and look down the hallway to see Jay walking down the hallway, rubbing the sleep from his nap. "Hey baby, what are you doing?" I ask as he stumbles over to me, hugging my legs as I stroke his head.
"He's simply adorable. Now, run along and fix your hair up and I'll get him dressed quickly. The party starts soon" she says, pushing a curl of hair behind her ear, smiling down at Jay as he looks up at her smiling.
"O-Oh... U-Um... Well, you s-see I was just g-going to stay h-home instead..." I stutter and mumble, looking down. Ruthie tsks at me and shakes her head.
"I'll give it to him, he sure knows you well," she mumbles before straightening her back. "Slash sent me over here, telling me you would most likely back out. I didn't believe him, thought you had more backbone than that. Now, get a move on. It's time for you to grow some balls and grow again. You can't live the rest of your life running when you're uncomfortable. What does that teach Jay, hm?" she questions, a kind smile on her face.
My face flushes red in embarrassment as I realise she's caught me out on my shit. I nod my head and bite my lip. "I know.. I'm just s-scared Ruthie... I don't w-want to hurt again.." I whisper, tears building in my eyes as I look at the ground.
I'm suddenly engulfed in a hug, Ruthie's cinnamon apple perfume filling my nose. I whimper and lean into her embrace as she stroke my hair and back. "I know hunni. I can see you've been hurt, saw it in your eyes the first time I met you. I've been there, I had a man use me as his punching bag simply because he could. My late husband saved me from him after seeing the bruises on me at the supermarket. He saved me and took care of me until he died 7 years ago. If it wasn't for him and me taking a chance I'd still be living in that hell, or probably even dead." she says into my hair, tears spilling down my cheeks as I listen to her tale. "What I'm trying to say though, is that you need to take chances. Some of those chances won't work out, and it'll probably even hurt. But no one ever got anywhere from sitting in the backgrounds. Take that chance hun. Don't let him win. Because if you give up, he wins. Even if you never see the bastard again."
I nod my head and wipe my eyes, wrapping my arms around the woman, hugging her tight. "Thank y-you so much, Ruthie..." I whisper, leaning back from her embrace and looking down at Jay, who's rubbing my legs in support. I kneel down and kiss his chubby cheek, smiling. "Come on baby boy, let's have some fun at the beach, aye?" I ask, smiling more as he nods with a grin.I turn to Ruthie and smile, wiping my cheeks dry. "His room is the last on the left. His chest of drawers is labeled so you should be able to find everything." I say and she nods, taking Jay's hand.
"Come on sweet boy, let's go get ready!" she says loudly, making Jay laugh as he drags her down to his room. I smile and follow them and walk back into my room. I take off the dress and have another look in my closet. My eyes notice a royal blue dress similar to the white one I had on. This one has spaghetti straps though, and the back has a cut out v section that dips until just above my ass, straps crisscross in the middle, holding the dress together.
I do a quick twirl and smile. It's modest and lightweight enough for the beach. I quickly run a brush through my hair, leaving it to flow free, showing off my blonde waves. I grab a pair or coral blue thongs and slip them on my feet. Looking back in the mirror I smile, feeling happy with myself. The honking of a car horn brings me out of my head. I run out into the kitchen and grab my keys, a bottle of sunscreen, a couple of towels and Jay's floaties that I had set there before getting ready.
I run out of the door, locking it behind me. I turn to the car park and see Ruthie already in her car with Jay strapped into a car seat in the back. I smile and run over, jumping in the passenger seat.
"Okay, ready!" I say happily, making Ruthie chuckle.
"Off we go!" she shouts as she turns the car on, making Jay and I chuckle. She puts the car in reverse and backs out of the car park before driving off in the direction of the beach. I smile and lean back into my seat, listening to Pink play on the radio. It's not long before we pull up at the beach. I look around and swallow hard, my hands starting to shake as I take in the amount of people present. The beach is packed with Slash's club and their woman and kids. Ruthie reaches over and squeezes my hand in support.
"Nothing bad will happen. Remember, take a chance. Not everything is as simple as it is on the outside." she says.
I nod and take a deep breath. I gather our stuff and step out. I look over and see Ruthie getting Jay. I round the car and come up behind them. Jay's wearing a pair of board shorts and some neon orange sandals, sunscreen already lathered on him as he bounces with excitement. "-wim! wim!" he shouts, pointing at the ocean.
I giggle and nod, "Yes baby, we're going to swim. Ready to go?" I ask and he nods quickly, ushering Ruthie along. We both laugh and make our way over.
The closer we approach, the more nervous I become. My thoughts turning black as I think up every reason I shouldn't have come. Why did I come? Slash will probably see me and tell me to leave. I bet he hates this dress. He probably thinks I look ridiculous.
These thoughts push through, filling me with fear. Ruthie pats my arm, bring me out of those dark thoughts, offering me a smile of support. I smile back and lift my head up, taking in everything around me, a couple of people are looking at me, and I smile at them. Looking back in front of me, my eyes widen in shock as I see Slash stomping over to me. Not even noticing how his chest is bare my head fills again with dark thoughts.
Why did I come?
