I put a smile on as I approach Ruthie and the other ladies who are standing under the gazebo. I can't believe he stole my bag! And my kid! Although Jay did look like he was having fun. I look up and see Ruthie, hurrying over to her.
"Hey dear, come and meet some of the old ladies," she says. Old ladies? They don't look old. In fact, some of them look around my age. The oldest looks to be a few years younger than Ruthie. "This here is Mary, she's the Prez's Old Lady," she says, nodding to the lady in the middle. She'd be about late 30's and she's a real beauty. She has jet black hair that goes just past her shoulders. She has a small pixie face with gentle features, although her eyes are hard. Full of wisdom and strength. I offer a small smile and my hand that she takes firmly and shakes.
"Hey," we say in unison. Ruthie introduces me to the other 3 women, Jaz, Steph, and Tammy. Jaz is Tommy's old lady, Steph is Mac's, and Tammy is Rollies. We all stand around the table, emptying the containers of salads into the serving bowls.
"So, Carly is it? Where'd you meet Slash?" asks Mary, regarding me with inquisitive eyes. I swallow as my mind flies back to the memory of cussing Slash out in front of the diner. My cheeks instantly heat up."U-Um... Well, we met at Ruthie's" I say softly, tilting my head downwards to avoid their questioning gazes. Ruthie snorts next to me and covers it with a cough, her hand covering her mouth as she fights a grin.
"Oh yeah, I remember Ruthie saying you worked at her place. So what, did you fall head over heels for him when he flashed that grin over the counter, hm?" she says sarcastically, making me frown. She's making me sound like an easy woman, and that is certainly not me.
"Actually, I slapped him and put him in his place after he suggested I was asking to be attacked by a pervert." I snap, glaring at Mary now, pissed at her words. The other woman all gasp while their eyes bug out of their heads. I stay glaring at Mary and watch as I grin lights up her face before she coughs out a laugh. Quickly she's laughing so hard tears are leaking out of her eyes."Y-You actually slapped him?! Like a full bitch slap to the face?" Mary asks, wiping her eyes from the tears that leaked. I slowly nod my head, my eyes wide as I try and get a read on her.
"U-Um, yes..." I say softly.
"THAT IS AMAZING! OH MY GOD! Tell me, was he pissed! What did he say! What did he do!" She squeals, rounding the table and taking hold of my forearms, pulling me closer to her as if we'd been best friends for years.
"He didn't say anything, I think he was too shocked that I'd even opened my mouth. His friends were the same." I say quickly as I let her lead me onto a camper chair, pulling one up beside me. The other girls all pick one up, including Ruthie and come and sit in a semi-circle around us.
"It was the best thing I'd ever seen girls. It's about time someone knocked his ego down a bit," says Ruthie with a chuckle, taking a sip from her can of lemonade.
"I'd pay big bucks to see that!" says Jaz, laughing and leaning back in her camper chair.
A chorus of agreement rings in the air as the other ladies all clang their cans together. I chuckle softly and shake my head. I'm surprised to see that they all thought it was funny, I was expecting at least one to get in my face and probably hit me over it.
"So, where are you from girlie?" Asks Mary as she cracks her own can of lemonade from the cooler beside her. She hands the open can to me and I take it with a small thank you, my hands chilling from the icy cold of the metal. I take a small sip, the bubbles tickling my throat as I swallow. The lemonade is so nice and cold I could almost moan.
"U-Um, I'm from Melbourne," I say shortly, not wanting to give them too much of a background as I fight the memories off quickly.
"Hm, I have an aunt who lives there, been a while since I visited though, going on 2 years now," she says as she grabs another can, opening it and take a large gulp.
"What about your son, he certainly a character. I thought I was going to cough up a lung the way I was laughing. Never seen the men so shocked into silence!" Says Jaz, a large smile present on her face.
My face flushes red as I bite down on my lower lip. "I think I just about died of embarrassment. He's never said anything like that before." I mutter, taking another drink of the cool drink.
"Don't fret girl, funniest fucking thing I've ever heard. Even the guys loved it. Most kids shrink and hide when they first meet the brothers, but your little man stood his ground and even called them fat!" chuckles Tammy, the other ladies joining in.
"How old is he?" asks Steph.
"2 years and 10 months. He's my pride and joy, don't know where I'd be if it wasn't for him" I say with a proud smile. My son really is my pride and joy, he lights up my entire world each and every day.
"He seems really sweet, where's his dad?" Asks Steph.
"Steph!" Hisses Mary and Ruthie.
I swallow down the lump in my throat and put on a smile. "He's not in the picture," I say softly, maintaining my smile.
