I woke up to a smash. "Hazel, wake up." I heard Bucky whisper. He shook me and I slowly opened my eyes. I rubbed my eyes and slowly sat up. "What was that smash?" I asked, yawning straight after. Bucky was sitting down next to me. "I think Ray's still drunk from last night. He probably just dropped a glass or something." Bucky said. He looked at me softly as I yawned again. There was another smash. I looked by the closet door but it was closed. The red paint was peeling off and scraps had already fallen to the foot of the door.
"What time is it?" I asked. Me and Buck both looked at the smashed clock on the damp floor which read 8:15 AM. I stood up and rubbed my eyes once more. "Let's go get breakfast; I'm hungry." whispered Bucky hoping not to be overheard by Ray. I stood up and combed my hair. The comb was broken in half and pulled some of my hair out, but it did the job. I split my parting down the middle then passed the comb to Bucky. He combed his brown hair until it looked neat enough and then placed it on the floor along with our other few possessions.
I slowly opened up the closet door and peaked outside. Ray was passed out on the sofa with a half empty bottle of vodka in his hands. I held a finger to my lips signalling Bucky to be as quiet as possible. We slowly stepped out and tiptoed across the living room, towards the front door. I slipped my hand around the cold handle and slowly pulled it down. The door slowly opened with a loud creak.
"Where do you think you're going?!" exclaimed Ray from behind us. He couldn't stand up straight and was still holding the bottle of vodka in his right hand. "Run!" shouted Bucky as he grabbed my hand and pulled me down the hallway. There was a smash behind us as Ray threw the bottle of vodka at us, just missing our feet. We ran down the corridor and never stopped. We ran down the stairs and out of the block of flats. When we got outside we ran behind the block of flats and stopped. We were both laughing and smiling at each other. We were both breathing heavily. "I love the mornings, don't you?" I said and looked at Bucky while still smiling. I put my hands on my knees and tried to get my breath back. "You said it!" Bucky laughed, smiling at me with a bright, happy smile. The rush was exhilarating. Its why we were so happy and smiley. We looked at each other again and smiled softly.
"Right, breakfast, where do you want to go?" said Bucky as he regained his breath.
"How about... McGregor's?" I asked. "Perfect...Lets go."
We put our hoods up and continued away from the block of flats.
We walked down the street and then turned a corner down an alley. In the alley were two green dumpster bins. We walked towards the one on the left and looked at each other. We jogged forward and grabbed hold of the sides of the garbage bin. Bucky got the right side and I got the left. "Ready...Pull!" exclaimed Bucky and we both pulled the green dumpster away from the alley wall. As we wheeled it away from the wall, it revealed two backpacks. A grey one and a black one.
Bucky went forward and grabbed both backpacks. He tossed me the black one and slung the grey one over his shoulders. I tossed the black one over mine. "Thanks." I called round to the other side of the dustbin. We pushed the garbage bin back towards the wall. At the end of the alley way was a fence about eight feet high. I brushed my hands on my already dirty clothes. Bucky looked up at the fence and started to climb. He hopped over the top and landed on his feet perfectly with bent knees and a single hand on the floor. I started to climb and hopped over the top of the fence. I started to climb back down when Bucky grabbed me. He picked me up and lifted me down on to the pavement.
Bucky was always taller than me so he always went first so he could help me down. "Thanks." I said to Bucky as he brushed his hands off on his clothes. We ran across the road to a small corner diner with a green sign above the window consisting of the word "McGregor's". We walked in and behind the till was an old lady with grey- shoulder length hair. "Morning Gloria!" I called from the diner entrance. I was surrounded by old wooden tables with colourful tablecloths.
"Morning Hazel, morning Bucky." She smiled at us softly as we walked towards her. We took down our jackets hoods to reveal our faces. Gloria gasped and dropped the butter knife she was using. She ran from behind the counter and grabbed us both into a tight hug. She gently wondered her thumb over Buck's lip with her left hand and used her right hand to brush my hair back to reveal a big gash on my head from a couple of days ago. "Is this Ray again. Why don't you tell anybody?" asked Gloria as tears started to swell up in her eyes. She pulled us in a tight hug again. She was warm and kind and was always caring for mine and Bucky's welfare.
"How about I make you your favourite for breakfast and then we'll talk...okay?" She asked in a gentle tone of voice with a kind smile. "Okay." We both said in sync trying to inject an inch of hope in our voices. She went back behind the counter and started to make mine and Buck's favourite. Jacket Potato with cheese and beans. Buck started to walk forward to 'our' table. It was a four seated wooden table. It had a blue tablecloth with lighter blue swirls on.
Me and Buck sat opposite each other as he slung his backpack onto his knee. He unzipped it to reveal a can of male deodorant and a red notebook with a black star in the centre. He reached for the can and sprayed under his arms. "Here." said Bucky. He tossed me the deodorant can over the table into my hands. I sprayed under my arms quickly. I tossed it him back. "Thanks" I said and I smiled at him softly.
Gloria walked over with two plates of food. She placed them down in front of us followed by a knife and fork. “Now tell me what happened...” Gloria said in a soothing voice. I sighed and looked at Buck. “It was just another beating...we are both fine.” Bucky reassured her. He didn’t do very well. “No, it's not fine... I can't believe feathergrill foster system won't even listen to you. You have the bruises and the cuts to prove it. I know I can't do much but at least come upstairs once you’ve eaten and have a shower.” Gloria said caringly.
We looked at her with thankfulness that someone still cared. We finished our meals and followed Gloria upstairs. There was a patterned carpet and magnolia walls. We followed her up the steep stairs. There was a small hall way with three different oak doors. She opened a door to reveal a beautiful tiled bathroom with a shower and a cabinet full of shampoos and conditioners and different shower gels. She then opened another oak door to reveal a bedroom. It had a real bed with soft and clean duvet covers. “Right, one of you can stay in here and change so I can wash your clothes while one of you can get in the shower.” said Gloria with a caring smile. Me and Bucky looked at each other with a smile on our faces. We could not remember the last time we had washed properly. Only when we ran back to Ray’s in the pouring rain. “Hazel can go first. I’ll wait here.” said Bucky quickly. I looked at him and smiled gently. He smiled back. I stepped up to him and hugged him tightly. “Thank you.” I whispered in his ear.
