The next few days, Joseph and his friends are no where in sight for me to point out to Shannon or Tyler. Maybe it was lame for me to expect them to be at the same spot when I first met them. They're probably hiding inside a classroom like Shannon, Tyler and I do. I don't know.
As I'm packing up my stuff and heading toward the cafeteria, a big headed, chipped toothed kid comes out of nowhere and steps right in front of me.
"Hey!" Joseph grins and waves excitedly at me.
"Hey," I fail to hold back my surprise. When you go without seeing someone for a few days when you're expecting to, you start to doubt you'll ever see them around. So when they pop out of nowhere, you might have a mini heart attack like I almost did.
"I was wondering if you'd wanna hang out with me and Elizabeth during lunch?" His big brown eyes stare at me.
As much as I'd like to see Elizabeth's face again, I think I'd prefer eating with Shannon and Tyler. I don't feel like spending my lunchtime being all awkward and nervous with a bunch of strangers.
"No thanks," my voice rises from my discomfort.
Joseph pouts. Literally. His bottom lip is sticking out and he's pinching his eyebrows together so hard, he looks like he's about to break into a sweat. I want to laugh. He looks like a little puppy you'd see in a horribly animated kids movie, with the big head, unnaturally large eyes, and smaller body.
"Come on! It'd be fuunnnn!" He reaches out and brushes his hand on my arm. From the look on his face, I can tell where he thinks this'll be going.
"Nope." I turn my back on him. No way in hell am I dating another guy, especially after that twat-faced Andrew. Plus, girls are totally hotter.
Joseph catches up to me. He whines, "Please? Pretty please with rainbow sprinkles and a Pegasus on top?"
I scoff, continuing to walk in silence.
"I really wanna get to know you more." He says. He's trying to charm me by lowering his voice and pretending to be hurt.
"Okay, well know this," I stop and face him. "I'm not interested in guys." I can't believe I even said that, ho-ly shit.
"But why not? I'm hot."
"Uhh, it's none of your business." Good lord. He's the first dude I've told about my lesbian-ness that wasn't either of my best friends.
"Come on," he teases, flexing his arm next to me. "How can you not be attracted to this bicep?"
"I'm about as attracted to your bicep as I am attracted to this wall." I can't believe this dude. Could he get any more cocky?
I walk away from him, hoping he'll leave me alone.
"Actually this wall is very attractive, Nicki!" Joseph calls from behind me. "One of these days I'll get you to have lunch with us!"
On the way to the caf', I keep glancing around for his friends, in case they want to ambush me too. Once I'm inside the cafeteria, I take a minute to breathe. Whyyy the hell did he want me to hang out with him and his friends so bad!? Jesus. And why was he all up in my personal bubble, touching my arm and crap. The fuck is it with guys!? Damn, hashtag-lesbian-problems.
When I'm grabbing my sad little chicken sandwich, I think I catch a glimpse of the back of Elizabeth's head. I squint at the head. Brown hair, just like hers. The girls shoulders are shaking from laughing. Or at least, I think she's laughing. People's shoulders shake when they laugh, right?
The girl turns her head slightly and it actually is Elizabeth. I give myself props for knowing my heads.
"Dude, check out this cookie." Shannon is suddenly next to me holding a mutated m&m cookie. It looks like it's trying to hold itself together but it keeps disintegrating in her hand. It's a pretty cookie that can't keep itself together. Sounds like something that "JustGirlyThings" would quote, damn.
