"There you go, have fun!" A woman placed her daughter gently on the gravel. "Be careful on the monkey bars Samantha."
Samantha folded her little arms as she huffed. "I don't want to play with him."
Her mother shook her head, sighing heavily.
"Why are you making me play with a cootie monster?" A little boy named Sean protested, imitating Samantha's stance. "She's COVERED in them! You might as well throw me in a cootie pool!"
What a turd, Samantha thought hastily, then whirled around on her heels towards the playground, dragging her stuffed animal along the ground.
"Go play Sean." His mother insisted, shoving him lightly forward. "It will be fun."
"Cooties..." Sean shook his head stubbornly as he stomped forward. "Cooties, cooties, cooties all she has. Is cooties." He grumbled to himself. "They should have named her the cootie momster."
Sean's mother clamped a hand on her friend's shoulders, and heaved a sigh. "Do you think they will ever get along so we can be in laws?"
"I hope so." Samantha's mother pursued her lips. "We have been planning this since we were about their age."
"Maybe it's just a stage...."
"HEY GIVE ME BACKS!" Samantha screamed as she began crying. "YOU ARE GOING TO HURT IT!"
Sean was shaking her stuffed bunny - burying it in the gravel as Samantha cried in protest. It was her favorite one aside from her platypus.
"SEAN! GIVE THAT BACK TO HER.....NOW!" His mother demanded.
Sean just turned his head then stuck out his tongue.
"SEAN!"
"It needs to be de-cootied!" Sean argued as Samantha plopped on her tiny bottom, crossing her arms as her pouting became more defined.
"I say...we should go grab some hot dogs." Samantha's mother suggested. "Let them sort this out."
"Good idea..." Her friend agreed as she began power walking towards the stand.
Over time they learned there was nothing they could do to stop their arguing, the only thing they did was pray that someday their children would get along, and eventually develop feelings for each other.
That wish seemed to decay more and more each day, but they still remained hoping - more like obsessing over it.
A menace expression appeared on Samantha's mother's face. "When they get older we can always make excuses for them to spend time together."
"Hopefully they won't murder each other."
"I know my daughter well, and it's obvious she has a hidden crush on him." Samantha's mother rubbed a hand through her brunette hair. "She enjoys him teasing her. I guarantee it."
Sean's mother grinned. "Right and Sean teases her because he likes her."
"See there is hope." Her friend assured her, and looked towards the man behind the hot dog stand. "Two hot dogs please."
"Oh, you don't have to buy mine..."
"No, it's my treat for watching Samantha a week ago."
"It's always a blessing to have her over." Sean's mother face wrinkled from her smiling. "I love her as if she were my own."
They both giggled as they bit into their hot dogs.
"Let go of my toy!" Samantha cried once more, still completely defenseless as their mother's sauntered back over to the benches.
Sean wiggled it in his hands with a scrunched up face.
"He still has my toy!" She turned to her mother with a hopeful expression.
"What? You ain't gonna come get it?!" The little boy taunted, causing the girl to cry even more.
Their mother's chuckled at the scene, oblivious to the fact it wasn't infatuation causing their children to fight, but pure hatred.
"Nah, nah, nah Sam can't catch me!" The boy continued to tease which caused the little girl to become enraged with anger.
"Be quiet Sean!"
He waved her toy in her face; she pouted deeply wanting to scorn him. When he threatened to rip the poor rabbit's head off she shot up, sprinting as fast as she could towards him.
"Uh, oh..." Sean choked out as Sam tackled him into the gravel.
From afar it looked like they were having the time of their lives, and according to their mothers they were the best of friends, or at least keeping that mind set.
But the truth was -
They were complete opposites. One was night, and the other was day.
Their mother's were more than determined to force two magnets fighting against each other, together. It was their biggest dream to become in laws if one had a girl, and the other a boy.
"Samantha is hurting me!!" Sean yelped.
His mother waved it off, "It's only because she likes you dear!"
Her like him...?
As if.
"Gimme backs my toy!" She snarled.
When he refused she shot around to her mother, "HE STOLE MY BUNNY!" She again repeated.
The mother's gave each other a quick glance, before giving the normal reflex response,
"It's only because he likes you."
Him like her...?
That was like asking a warthog to fly.
"They are so cute...." The mothers said in unison.
If only they weren't so blind, and would realize their children were ready to murder each other.
****
"Mommy I hate him!" Samantha whined as they drove off.
"Aw, he just has a crush on you, sweetie."
She crossed her arms, scoffing.
"We don't have nothin' in common." She grumbled, glowering at her mother.
"Haven't you heard honey?" Her mother took her eyes off the road to look at her daughter, "Opposites attract."
