Chapter Nine

I raced out the back emergency door under the pep band, in hopes to find Mike. Once outside, though, I could only see a parking lot vacant of people.

He couldn't have gone too far.

I stopped running but slowly walked around the parking lot, looking between the cars, looking for a tall figure to be crouched behind them. I didn't have any luck though, and I didn't see anyone run off. It was as if he had just disappeared. 

I cursed under my breath and went back inside, hoping to finish watching the game, but I knew my mind was about to be in other places.

Once the game was over, I sat in the back of the parking lot waiting for (Y/N) to join me. It took her about twenty minutes for her to break away from her friends, which felt sooner than normal. When she got in the car, she was no longer sweaty and didn't smell nearly as bad as I feared she might.

"Good job," I tried to cheer her on. 

"You don't have to say things that aren't you," she replied with a genuine smile, "I'm just happy that you came."

She saw past my words, but for the wrong reason. I did think she did well, but that wasn't on my mind. Mike was on my mind. 

"So you want to go sit in the back of the diner and get some coffee?" she asked.

I wanted to say yes. I knew how much she hated that and was so willing to go and do that with me. I wanted to say yes and spend more time with her, but I couldn't. I had to take care of other things.

"Actually, I'm really tired, and you should be, too- you just had a game. How about I take you home?" I suggested.

I saw the light in her eye dim. "Yeah I guess you're right. We have school tomorrow."

"Hey, you really did do amazing tonight," I said in a serious tone, looking her in the eyes.

Her smile returned. "Thank you."

I drove her home and dropped her off at home. Before she got out of the car, I gave her a kiss on the head and told her goodnight. I waited for her to get into the house before I drove off to find that faggy Vamp kid.
