The following morning brings a whole lot more awkwardness on many different levels. Awkwardness that I've never had to experience before.
One of the serving wenches that works in the tavern knocks me up out of bed at 8:00am, informing me that breakfast is being served downstairs in the tea room.
I haven't had the opportunity to sleep in until 8:00am since I don't know when. But I don't really feel the benefit due to not having slept very well.
After Thomas had left, I'd felt all churned-up. A million different thoughts filling my head. Wild, unimaginable thoughts like what it would be to have him for my own.
There's very little chance of that ever happening. Gentlemen of nobility and the upper classes never marry below their station.
So what had that brief but luxurious forbidden encounter been all about last night?
In a moment of madness the two of us had cast all inhibitions and protocol aside and given in to a primal temptation to breach the barrier created by society which prevents such fornication between Master and servant.
But it goes on nonetheless. I discovered that firsthand at Aldermont, the inappropriate relations between the gentry and staff.
Now here I am, partaking in the same unspeakable shenanigans. After putting up such a vehement fight against Major Cecil Hamdbrooke and his greasy son for so long, the fist time I find myself in the company of a devilishly attractive man....I surrender to his advances willingly.
Oh Lord, what's happening to me?
I've never felt this way about a man before. Ever.
To want him the way I do, is deeply unsettling. He's managed to stir-up feelings and emotions in me that I've only ever read about in books.
It's like a sexual awakening.
He's awoken a salaciousness in me I never even knew existed. And even though I feel quite ashamed in the cold light of day -- because it's startlingly unforgiving, unlike when you're consumed with passion by the soft glow of candlelight -- but still I find myself wanting to do things with Thomas that I'd never dare so with anyone else.
The sort of things that would make my mother ashamed no doubt, and my father disown me.
After making my way downstairs I find myself sitting at a small table across from Lady Lucille. Her stoic countenance is imposing and makes her seem stand-offish and unapproachable.
At first her silence worries me, and I wonder if she's somehow discovered the sordid secret I now share with her brother.
But no, that cannot be possible.
Thomas would not have discussed it with her.
It's bizarre enough as it is, finding myself sat at a table with someone who is so above me in class. But her reluctance to even acknowledge my presence makes it all the more awkward.
I sip tea from a China cup, and the saucer begins to shake nervously in my hands when I see the familiar figure of Thomas enter the tea room.
He looks dashing in his blue velvet tailcoat and waistcoat, which appears to be ever so slightly shabby, yet chic.
When he sees me his pale complexion colours considerably, turning his face dusky. He meets my eyes nervously and a small, cautious smile plays on his lips.
Those lips.
I find myself heating up at the memory of what those lips did to me. The way they'd devoured parts of my body that should be off-limits to unmarried people.
I'd allowed him to do things to me that I never would have dreamed about before meeting him.
"Good morning, (Y/N)." He says cheerily, pulling a chair out for himself before sitting down next to Lucille.
"Good morning, Sir." I manage in response.
He's so calm and collected, and only betrays a hint of being ever so slightly flustered, which wouldn't be noticed by the untrained eye.
To be honest, I only notice because I'm observing him closely....and I know what we did last night.
