--POV = Virgil--

I stepped up to the apartment, glaring at the boring brick building in front of me. I glanced down at my right wrist and picked at the dark purple gem that lay there. I wondered briefly how I would get on in this strange new world, meeting new people and having to... socially interact. Reluctantly, I walked up to the door. Frowning, I rang the doorbell. Nobody answered. I rang again. Nothing. I must be the first to arrive. Hoisting my rucksack higher onto my back, I swung open the door and wandered inside. There wasn't much, just a table and a fireplace with some chairs and a couch. A stained glass door led out to what I could only guess was a balcony. I could see four bedrooms. One for each of us.

I know gems don't need to sleep, but it's comforting. I look around for the darkest room and settle in the smallest one with a single bed, bedside cabinet and black painted closet. As I unpack my stuff, I hear somebody enter the house. I quickly turn my head, leap out of the room and summon my weapon, a double-ended black ribbon whip with a gem similar to the one on my wrist at the handle. I swung at the person, not bothering to see who it was.

"Hey!" a samurai sword sliced the air, inches away from my face.

I looked to see who it was, and see standing before me a handsome man. He was wearing a white shirt with a red sash wrapped around his torso. He wore blue skinny jeans and held a silver samurai sword in one hand. In the other was a red suitcase. His gem was a pure gold oval just above his chest. He wore a sarcastic look.

He scanned me up and down, "Try not to take my face off, alright?"

He walked past me, dragging his suitcase behind him.

I paused, "Wait... Who are you?"

He glanced back at me, "I'm Roman, your new roommate." he let go of his sword and it disintegrated. "Nice eye shadow, by the way." With one last look, he strode off to examine the rooms.

I stayed there, dismayed. This was my new roommate?! He hated me! He's the most princely man I'd ever seen. In a strange way, I felt outdone. This gem was so much better than I will ever be. He had a SAMURAI SWORD! How can he be that cool?

I just hoped that my other two roommates weren't as glamorous as Roman.

With one last sulky huff, I flipped my hood over my head and stalked off to my bedroom. I grabbed my phone and makeup bag from my rucksack and sunk into my bed, folding the cover over my head. Using my phone as a mirror, I touched up on my eye shadow before scrolling unenthusiastically through social media.

I heard the door swing open. After my experience with Roman, I didn't even bother to go see who it was.
