--POV = Virgil--

I stared at my phone, lazily scrolling through social media. I heard someone walk over to me.

"Hey, handsome!" Roman said cheerfully.

I glanced up, eyeing him angrily, "Roman, we've been over this."

He plonked next to me and leaned over to peck me on the cheek, "Okay, Mister Miserable!"

A smile played with my lips, "Roman, stop it!"

He laughed and put his arm around my shoulders.

"Where's Patton?" I asked.

"Outside on the balcony with Logan." he replied absent-mindedly.

"Oh, he's not still doing that thing, is he?" I grumbled.

Roman rolled his eyes and nodded, "Yeah."

Over the past few days since we'd defeated Deceit, Patton had spent most of his free time with Logan trying to, as he put it, 'teach him how to feel'. I'd tried to tell him it was no use, but he would never listen. He said there's no point in just giving up without even trying.

I sighed, "I'm getting some coffee."

Roman nodded and pulled out his phone. I stood up and wandered over to the kitchen, hands in my pockets. I hastily made the coffee and then turned to go back to the couch. I yelped in shock. Remy was sitting in the middle of the kitchen, staring at me ominously.

Anger boiled inside me, "Right that's it!"

"What's up with you?" Roman asked, annoyed.

"Patton!" I yelled, putting the coffee on the counter, "Logan! Get in here now!"

The glass door leading to the balcony swung open and Patton's head popped round the side, "What's the big idea?"

"I'm sick of living with that!" I jabbed my finger at Remy, "When I don't even know if it's actually a dog!!"

"What do you mean?" Patton said innocently, walking fully in.

"Don't pretend!" I said as Logan came in behind him, "We all saw it; that gem on his back! It needs to be figured out."

Patton thought for a second. Then he sighed and walked up to Remy. The black pomeranian whimpered but did not struggle as Patton picked him up.

"Remy," Patton said calmly, "Are you a gem?"

Remy looked at him blankly. There was a pause.

"Oh, come on." Roman sighed.

He walked over and lifted up the fur on Remy's back. And sure enough, underneath was a tear-shaped, jet black gem, barely visible against the black fur.

"How did I not see this before?" I heard Patton mutter.

"Logan," I called, "What gem is this?"

Logan leaned over and frowned at the gem. Then he suddenly clicked his fingers, "Of course! How can I be so stupid?!"

"What?" Roman asked.

He pointed at the gem, "That's an Onyx!"

"An Onyx?" I repeated, "I've heard of those. Aren't they super rare?"

"Correct." he smiled, "And they are some of the only gems that can shapeshift for long periods of time without getting stretched. Although they lack a weapon, they make up for that by being able to fly and also being incredibly stealthy due to their shapeshifting."
