Chapter One
************************************************************************************************
I looked up at the house and a feeling of utter confusion washed over me. "This can't be the place," I muttered to myself, looking down at the piece of paper with the address scribbled in my father's handwriting. My gut twisted and turned inside of me as I remembered the reason I was there in the first place.
Turning away from the building that I had incorrectly identified as being my mother's house, I gingerly began to walk towards my car, trying not to be mistaken for a trespasser by any passersby. I hoped that the increasing darkness of the early night would give me a bit of help in my great escape.
"Hello?" a male voice asked behind me. Busted, I thought to myself, as I turned around cautiously.
"Um, hi," I replied awkwardly, retracing my footsteps closer to the door of the magnificently constructed building that I was stupid enough to end up at.
"Do you mind telling me-oh, good God!" The male's piercing emerald eyes grew wide as I continued stepping closer to him. And I could understand why.
He was the image of me.
"Oh my . . ." I replied in awe. Except for the stubble and numerous piercings on his face, we were identical. My mouth suddenly became dry as I struggled to find a reasonable explanation for what I was seeing.
"Are you Kasey?" he asked, with a hint of hope in his voice.
"Um, no. I-I'm Kayleigh," I replied hesitantly. I couldn't believe what was happening. It couldn't have been a coincidence-showing up at what I thought was my mother's house, only to be mistaken, and then to be introduced to a guy who not only looked the same age as me, but actually appeared physically identical to me?
Yup. Definitely NOT a coincidence.
"Well, Kayleigh, I believe we have some . . . talking to do," he stated, taking a deep breath and gesturing to our matching faces.
"I-oh, bloody hell . . ."
And before I knew it, I was no longer looking into an imaginary mirror. Instead, I saw the jaggedness of the concrete beneath me, my surroundings swirling, dancing, liquefying, and solidifying, as if I had been drugged.
And then . . .
Black.
