This is all Jisoo's Fault

"Jisoo this isn't where my school is!" I protested as she stopped the car. She turned around and gave me a wicked grin.

"Yeah I know," she laughed. "But you have 5 minutes till the bell, and 3 kilometres to walk, so I would get running if I were you kiddo."

My stomach dropped and I flung open the car door. I was running before my feet even hit the pavement. It took me a minute to get my bearings, but soon I saw that she had dropped me off outside a local supermarket. The reason I was here was glaringly clear. Less than a fortnight ago, this was the scene of my latest prank on Jisoo. I had ambushed her as she had left the supermarket, and doused her brand new Gucci jumpsuit in gelato. She only confirmed my suspicions with her next comment.

"Get a better taste in gelato!" she yelled through the window as she drove away. I sighed and began to jog towards the school. I quickly texted my best friend, Kim Soo-mi.

"Hey I'm gonna be a few minutes late, can you tell Lee sunsaeng-nim that I will be there shortly?"

She replies seconds later. "Filming go overtime again?" I skidded to a halt as I nearly ran onto the road in my distraction.

"Nah. Just Jisoo being Jisoo. Gtg, sys"

I shoved my phone in my back pocket and began to run faster

"8 minutes and 29 seconds. That's how much of my teaching time you have missed hak-saeng".

I bowed quickly to him.

"I'm very sorry sunsaeng-nim", I apologised, before dropping my bag on my desk. My teacher slammed his hand on the table.

"This is the 2nd time this week, and it's only Wednesday!" I could hear the barely masked distaste in his voice. "If I cannot convince you to show up on time, maybe Seung won-jahng-nim will have more luck. His office. Now".

I picked up my bag and moved towards the door, but not before Soo-mi could shove her workbook into my hands.

"Take this. At least then you won't be behind on class work." I gave her a quick hug.

"Wish me luck with won-jahng-nim", I whispered, before releasing her and marching out of the classroom, making a point to slam the door as hard as possible behind me.

"Name?" The receptionist wasted no time on pleasantries.

"Summer Manoban", I matched her tone.

"Reason for being here?"

"Read the note".

She glared at me over her spectacles. "Take a seat. Seung won-jahng-nim will be with you shortly".

I dropped into one of the many hard wooden chairs that lined the hallway to the office of Seung won-jahng-nim. Only one other chair was occupied, and the boy sitting in it watched me kick the leg of my chair before I sat down.

"What's got you so wound up?" he asked.

"Lee sunsaeng-nim", I muttered. He leaned in closer to me.

"Didn't catch that sweetheart. Mind repeating it?" I shoved him away.

"Who even are you?!" He gave a light chuckle as he leaned back in his seat.

"Exchange student. Nathan Jones. I just arrived yesterday. Who are you?"

"Summer Manoban". I held out my hand for him to shake. His hand was warm and firm when he grasped mine.

"Manoban? Like Lisa Manoban?"

"My sister", I replied curtly.

"Yes, she's very famous in Canada". He looked at me with admiration. "You don't really look that much like her".

"Manoban hak-saeng", Seung won-jahng-nim appeared from his office, thankfully cutting the conversation short.

"Good luck Summer Manoban", Nathan whispered to me.

I followed Seung won-jahng-nim down a short corridor until we reached a small conference room.

"Please take a seat", he gestured to one of the plush red sofas. "Would you like a glass of water?" I sat down and shook my head.

"Thank you won-jahng-nim, but I would really just like to get this meeting over with". He sat down opposite me and pulled out a thick binder full of sheets of paper.

"Do you know what this is?" he asked me, his eyes never leaving mine.

"No won-jahng-nim. Is it a file of some sorts?"

"It's your file hak-saeng. Every triumph and failure since your first day at Keisung High." He placed the file in front of me. "Open it".

"No thank you". I leaned away from it as if it could bite me. I knew what every piece of paper in that binder would say. 'Disobedient, loud, annoying'. These were not traits I needed a file to confirm the existence of.

"I want to give you another chance. A chance to pretend this file never even existed." I looked at him quizzically.

"You mean when I submit applications for university, it just won't exist?"

"Correct." Seung won-jahng-nim smiled at me. "You still have the whole year ahead of you to create a new and shining record, and a year after that if you should choose to continue with your education."

"What's the catch?" I asked

"The catch? Well, it isn't really a catch. It's more like... I'd like you to do me a favour."

"What kind of favour?" I asked warily.

"We have a new student joining us, and she will begin her schooling here in exactly 2 weeks."

"How does this relate to me?" My leg began to bounce and my mouth felt dry.

"Well I would like you to be her guide, and see to it that she enjoys her time here".

"Why me?? You have so many students to choose from. People with better grades, brighter futures, richer parents. Why me?" Seung won-jahng-nim licked his lips nervously.

"Well, you have something special. Something that you two shall find easy to connect over." I stood up to leave.

"I'll do whatever I need to for that clean slate."

"Wouldn't you like to know the name of our new student before you leave?" Seung won-jahng-nim called to me.

"Who?" I asked, one foot already out the door.

"Kwon Eun, the 17-year-old sister of Kwon Ji-yong." I didn't even feel the door crushing my foot. I was completely frozen.

"I won't let you down won-jahng-nim", I promised.

The door shut with a thud behind me. I sunk to the floor and wrapped my arms around my legs.

"Kwon Eun", I whispered.
