Chad spun around and strutted away down the hallway, his heavy boots clunking loudly with each step.
Colin let his breath out, and his face became less angry. He came to sit by me and Willie, who had fallen asleep quickly after laying down.
"What is he going to do to you?" I asked quietly.
Colin shook his head. "I don't know, but he can do anything as long as he doesn't hurt you and little Will."
He leaned back against the cold stone walls and shivered. I sniffled and rested my heads on his shoulders. He put a couple arms around me.
"Don't worry. I won't let him hurt you," he whispered in my ears.
I sighed.
Somebody switched off the prison lights, and we were pitched into darkness.
One week later
The light from the lantern cast an eerie glow across Chad's putrid face. "How do you feel now?" he hissed. Colin lifted his head with a painful groan. I hated to see him like this, in so much pain from his last zap.
Little Bill stood next to me, clutching as many of my fingers as he could hold. I looked down at him and saw tears in his eyes.
Chad suddenly yanked on the chain that was attached to my legs, jerking me forward into the green light.
For days, Colin had tried to escape, sneaking out of line every chance he got. He had never succeeded, and in return got constantly electrocuted with a torture device that fried his insides every time Chad pressed a button.
"If you continue to disobey and attempt to escape more, Paithenia will soon be enduring the same pain as you, dear brother," Chad snarled, a playful, evil grin on his face.
I tried to look strong and powerful, even though the shackles cutting into my bare ankles were nearly unbearable.
Colin stood up to his full height bravely. I could tell he felt like doubling over in pain.
Chad scowled. "Well, I certainly hope you will begin to accept my ways and obey. For your wife's sake, of course." He walked away, dragging myself and William along with him.
His heavy boots clunked down the corridor. I turned my head quickly and blew Colin a silent kiss. He slumped against the bars, obviously exhausted. I feared he could not hold on much longer.
Chad's torture was draining all the life out of him.
A tear slipped down my cheek. I hated that I couldn't just jump in and save him. I hated how Chad forced us to watch. I hated how Colin lied to me, telling me he was fine when really I knew, he was being cooked!
Suddenly, interrupting my thoughts, Chad turned and dropped William and I on the cold metal floor in the servant's quarters. The large door slammed shut, and Will crawled into my lap, where he laid for a few minutes. I brushed my fingers through his tangled hair and hugged him tight to make him warm. I sang the song my mother used to sing to me when I was just a little girl. Soon he was snoring softly, and I leaned my head back on the concrete walls.
I closed my eyes and tried to imagine things were all right.
Colin coming in the front hole, smiling sweetly and exclaiming, "How's my little Willie?" as our son ran into his arms and gave him a big hug. Then Colin would come over and kiss me and make me feel secure and happy like everything was fine... I shivered at the memory. Things were different then. When we had a normal life. It had all changed when Chad took us.
I felt my eyelids flutter. The thought of home and Pluto made me sleepy. Pretty soon I was...
I woke with a start. Someone was banging on the walls of the servant's room.
