My spacecraft had crash-landed in a large open field covered with green spikes and strange flowers.
I blinked up at the huge sun, which was EXTREMELY big, bigger than it was when we were on Pluto or Neptune.
I caught my breath.
We.
There was no "we" anymore. I had left behind, deserted, abandoned my only child, my beautiful William.
I collapsed on the strange soft ground and gave in to tears once more.
Suddenly, a shadow towered over me. I looked up and gasped. A human! It was a man, I guessed, by its short hair and masculine features.
It looked at me curiously. Then, I remembered, in our Earth history class when I was a girl, the teacher had told us that every alien was capable of changing their appearance to look like a human. How did she say to do it? Close your eyes, breathe in and out three times, and think about humans.
Three seconds later I heard the human gasp and I opened my eyes.
Now, instead of looking up at it, I was standing level with its (strangely only two) eyes.
Alarmed, I raised my hands to my faces, only to realize I had just one face and only two hands! I panicked.
"What's going on?" my own voice sounded strange and weak.
Looking down at my feet, I saw there were only two of them. Their shape was funny and wonked, with five little knobs poking out of each one. If I concentrated enough, I could wiggle them.
I was still wearing my servant's garb, yet it was stretched to match my new shape.
The man was staring at my face, his one mouth dropped open wide in shock and disbelief. In his hand he held a strange tube, with pieces of glass at each end. It was long and thin, much like the man's fingers as he clutched it until his knuckles turned white.
His gaping mouth slowly formed to make a wide smile. "Wow!" His voice was even stranger than mine. He put his two hands on his head and spun around, laughing. "You're an alien? Right? A-a Pluto-an?" Before I could say anything he fired off more questions. "Are you hurt? How did you change form? You flew here from Neptune, right? I can't believe this is happening." He jumped up excitedly.
Gasping for air he continued, "It worked! I can't believe it actually honestly worked! I knew I wasn't a kooky psycho! But I KNEW my telescope worked!" I was kinda mortified when he ran over and looked me up and down and down and up, his eyes getting wilder. He then whipped out a notebook and wrote down notes at a speed unimaginable, his writing never faltering for a second.
He must have seen the bewilderment in my eyes because he stopped and slid his notebook in his pocket and darted over to me.
"My apologies. I got so excited I forgot my manners! I am Jace Parker." He took off his jacket and wrapped it around my bare shoulders, its warmth reminding me of the first time I was with Colin. This caused tears to swell in my eyes and I limped against him.
Awkwardly, he patted my head.
"Come now, Plutoan. I'll take you to my apartment just over there. Chances are people will come venturing this way soon. I can't wait to see the look on their faces when they see I was right! They'll see I was right all along! Haha!" Each word came fast and he never paused for half a second.
"But we really need to get you what you need." He adjusted his jacket on my shoulders, and I tried my best to securely wrap my old garments around me.
Jace looped an arm under my arm and around my waist. He looked in my eyes and said, "Welcome to New York, alien."
