Chapter 23

Losing my parents at the young age is the hardest part of my life. Kahit bata pa ako noon alam kong magbabago ang buhay ko dahil sa pagkawala ng magulang ko.

“Avresia Hidalgo.” my nurse came together with a two married people in my room. My nurse smile sweetly at me when she see me looking at her.

We were all together in the car when a truck hit us. And unfortunately my parents passed away and I miraculously survived. Sugat at galos lang ang natamo ng katawan ko sa nangyari and unluckily my parent died on the spot, I was staying in the hospital for two days now. No one visited me for the past two days. May mga kamag-anak naman kami pero ang sabi ni mama ay itinakwil siya ng mga ito ng makipagtanan siya kay papa. Si papa naman ay nag-iisang anak lang at ang mga magulang niya ay matagal ng pumanaw. So I'm technically alone.

Hindi ko pa gaanong maintindihan ang pagkawala nila pero kahit hindi pa maunawaan ng isip ko ang bilis ng pangyayari sa paligid ko, ang puso ko naman ay kumikirot. Simula ng dalhin ako sa hospital ay hirap akong makatulog, may kung ano sa dibdib ko na sobrang bigat sa pakiramdam.

The other day a two women from the DSWD came to check on me. I know what type of people they are and what job they have. I guess I'll be in their care once I get discharged from the hospital.

“Avresia, do you know them?” the nurse asked me. She's nice and always here to talk to me.

Nag-angat ako ng tingin sa mag-asawang itinuro niya, mariin akong tumitig sa mga mukha nila. Maya-maya pa ay marahan akong tumango sa nurse.

“I think I saw them from somewhere.” Hindi siguradong sagot ko at nanatili pa din ang tingin sa mga bagong dating.

Marahang ngumiti at saka tumango ang nurse sa akin.”This is Mr. And Mrs. Stallix, Avresia.” The nurse introduced the familiar faces.

“I met them in a party.” sabi ko ng maalala kung saan ko sila nakita.

“Oo, hija. We were there in your parents's anniversary. We were invited.” Mrs. Stallix spoke softly, her eyes were like smiling.  She looks so nice.

I nodded politely.

“How are you doing here?” ilang segundo pa ay nagsalita ulit ang ginang.

“I'm feeling better, Ma'am.” magalang na sagot ko na umani naman ng mahinhin na tawa mula kay Mrs. Stallix.

“Just call me tita Rea,” pagkatapos ay itinuro nito ang asawa.”And this is your tito Ryder.” she introduced.
“I've heard what happened to your parents, hija. Hindi agad kami nakaluwas ng Manila dahil hindi naman namin maiwan agad ang mga bata sa Caligtan kaya ngayon lang kami nakadalaw sa iyo. I am your mother's bestfriend. We're inseparable before, kaya lang noong nag-kapamilya kami naging busy na kami sa mga asawa't anak namin kaya bihira na lang magkita at makapagbonding.” pagkukuwento niya.

And I just remain quiet, staring at her.

“Oh, I'm sorry. I've talked too much. Anyway we came here to ask you, hija if you want to live with us?” she asked, there's a hint of hope in her voice.

Live with them? Why?

“Alam kong wala ng pamilya ang ama mo at ang ina mo naman ay matagal ng walang communication sapamilya nito. And now that...that they are gone...” she paused, pasimple nitong pinunasan ang pisngi. “That means you're all alone by yourself. And we were informed that two people from the DSWD just came yesterday here to talk to you. You'll be in their care once you got discharged from here. But...if you want to live with us. We can give you a home, you can also treat us like your second family, and we can provide you with everything you need and want. You're afterall my bestfriend's daughter ayokong pabayaan ka.” maramdaming at puno ng senseridad na sinabi nito sa akin.
