"Mum, do I have to go to school?" Patton whined as he kept lifting up his spoon and dropping it back down into his cereal, his head resting on his hand and his elbow leaning on the table.

"Of course you do Patton. You know this" his mother sighed as she rushed around the house, making sure that both of her sons were ready for school. Patton's mum was a loving, kind and caring lady who always seemed to have a warm smile on her snow white face, a twinkle in her bright blue eyes and silk in her soft brown hair. It's a pity that such a lovely lady had so much pain in her heart. But the kindest people always seem to have suffered the most. Her husband left her the day she gave birth to her youngest son Patton so for eleven years, she had been trying her hardest to look after her two sons whilst still trying to work and provide money for her small family. But somehow, they managed to get by. Barely. But they managed it.

"Why?" Patton whined.

"Because, it's your first day at secondary school so you have to go. Now hurry up and eat your breakfast or you'll be late on your first day and we can't have that can we?" Patton was silent. "Can we?" His mum repeated her sentence with a harsher tone.

"No mother" Patton sighed.

"Exactly. So eat up. There's a good boy" She ruffled his hair before gently kissing his forehead and heading into the kitchen to prepare her sons' lunches.

"You know little bro, school's not that bad once you get used to it. I mean it can be boring but you'll get used to it" Patton's older brother Remy playfully nudged him. Remy was the complete opposite to both his mum and Patton: carfree, rebellious, popular, confident and always armed with a witty or sarcastic comment. Patton was nothing like Remy. He wasn't as carefree as Remy and was often finding something to worry about. He wasn't as rebellious as Remy and always obeyed every rule in fear of getting in trouble plus he was far too childlike to have a rebellious streak. He wasn't as popular as Remy or as likeable because his childish behaviour and clingyness drew people away from him and sometimes made people tease him. And finally, he wasn't as confident as Remy as he was very shy and often hid behind family members or teachers, anyone who he knew would offer him protection.

"How would you know?" Patton asked. "You're barely even in your classes because you always bunk your lessons to hang out at the back of the school with your friends

"What was that?" Their mum called from the kitchen.

"Nothing mum" Remy quickly slapped his hand over Patton's mouth, muffling all his words.

"I hope it was nothing" Their mum replied. "You know Remy, you're really gonna have to up your game this year. You're a year 10 and you know what that means: you're starting your GCSE course this so you'll have to pay more attention in class and actually do your homework instead of making up petty excuses. I really don't want to get as many calls home as last year" She rambled whilst Remy silently mimicked her.

"Yeah yeah I know" Remy rolled his eyes.

"Just a quick reminder, that's all" And with that, she shut the door. Remy ripped his hand off of Patton's mouth and glared at him.

"I thought I told you not to tell anyone" Remy gritted his teeth.

"Sorry. Must have forgotten" Patton giggled.

"Right, your lunches are all done" Their mum swung the kitchen door open, placing their lunch boxes in front of them. "Now hurry up and eat your breakfast. The sooner you eat it, the sooner we can get you two to school"

"Mum" Patton's expression turned to a more serious and concerned one as he dropped his spoon and looked up at his loving mother.

"Yes sweetheart"

"I'm scared" He admitted as he buried his head in her chest.

"Scared? Why are you scared? I thought you were excited to go to a new school"

"It's just, what if the kids tease me again? What if they make fun of me? What if they bully me? What if it's like Primary School all over again?" Patton looked back up at his mum, his eyes brimming with tears.

"They will if you're wearing that outfit" Remy commented, earning a look of disapproval from his mother. I mean sure maybe Patton's dark denim dungarees and pastel pink shirt topped with black rimmed glasses may not have been as stylish as Remy's black leather jacket and white t shirt topped with sunglasses resting on top of his head but he still didn't deserve to be made fun of for it.

"Don't listen to him sweetheart. He's only messing with you" Patton's mum reassured him, pulling him into a tight hug. "Everything will be just fine, I promise"
