Chapter 10 - Bonding and Breaking

YOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!! I know I said I would try to update this last update, but then I realized that I didn't have time, so here's the promised update. Y'all may or may not hate me afterwards.

"Albus, there's only one explanation!" Remus said. The headmaster, who was sitting behind his desk, steepled his fingers under his chin. "There are several explanations my dear boy. You only see the explanation that is most relevant, and possibly disturbing, to you." His bright blue eyes twinkled at the werewolf, who found himself getting exasperated at the headmaster's antics. 

"Albus, with all due respect, I firmly believe that my explanation is the only viable explanation when all factors are taken into account," Remus stated, eyeing the old man firmly. Albus sighed. "Remus, you forget that werewolves only mate with other werewolves, and Harry is definitely not a werewolf. Now, would you like to hear my theory?" 

Remus bit the inside of his cheek, regretting the action when the metallic taste of blood hit his tongue. He wanted to step in and defend his Alpha, but one, Albus was much more powerful than Remus was, and two, Harry didn't want anyone knowing about his lycanthropy. Despite thinking that it wasn't a very smart decision, Remus fully planned to honor Harry's wishes. "Sure," he said, irritation evident in his tone. 

Albus looked at him with kind, sympathetic eyes that seemed to be a mask for a deeper pity. "You have never had the chance to have children of your own, Remus," Albus began. "However, you were instrumental in raising Harry for the first year of his life, and I believe that your fatherly instincts are returning and manifesting themselves. My theory is that you are simply misinterpreting those feelings as a crush on Harry." 

Remus frowned mentally. There were more than a few grains of logic in what Albus was saying, and it was making him question his initial thoughts. 

"What if Harry was a werewolf, though? Which theory would hold up better in that situation?" he asked, testing the headmaster. 

"I still believe my theory would win out," the old man replied. "Werewolves typically do not mate with werewolves that are significantly more or less powerful than themselves, and, with no offence intended, it must be noted that Harry is a great deal more powerful than you are." 

Remus took a deep breath and nodded. "Very well. Thank you for your time." Albus nodded in response to Remus' thanks. "Lemon drop?" he offered, holding the dish out. Remus hesitated, then took one with a small smile, figuring that accepting Albus' offer would help patch the rocky tension between them. As annoying and manipulative as Remus found Albus to be on occasion, he did find the old man to be endearing most of the time. 

As he walked out of the office and down the steps, he noted to himself that even though Albus' theory made a lot of sense, he still held true to his own theory. He was so engrossed in his thoughts that he didn't notice the person walking towards him at a rather high rate of speed. Therefore, he was extremely surprised when a body smacked into his, sending him stumbling backwards, trying to remain upright while also trying to steady whoever it was that had bumped into him. 

When he managed to secure his footing, he instinctively grabbed the person's waist, noting the messy black hair and Quidditch-toned arms that gave away the person's identity. "We really need to stop meeting like this," Remus stated. Harry looked up at the professor and laughed. "Yes, yes we do," he replied, emerald eyes twinkling. 

Remus realized that he was still holding Harry's waist, but was loath to release the boy. Harry's hands were warm weights placed on Remus' shoulders, but the boy seemed reluctant to release the professor. Remus found his breath hitching and picking up as their eye contact continued. He could feel Harry's breath doing the same under his hands, but he didn't take the time to register what that might mean.
