Ah, love Daisy.
Anyway, we all have or have seen those cliche powers:
- Wings (flying)
- Control of the elements
- Telekinesis, which we've mentioned so I won't go into extreme detail on that one
- High intelligence (so guilty)
Okay, so you have one of these or you're thinking of one of these and you know what
THAT'S OKAY!!
Seriously, it's alright to want to use one of these, I don't judge. Now, this is where we get into the nitty gritty though. We're going one at a time through these and breaking them down so bear with me.
Wings/Flying
I admit, wings are not a superpower, but I still am grouping them together. I've seen this multiple times in stories, but it's alright if you want to use it. I mean, who doesn't want to fly? Now, to use this, don't make your OC fly around and suddenly the wings can turn into stone and break a person's neck (That's Doctor Who y'all, not this).
And for crying out loud, where are the people with wings WHO ARE UNCOMFORTABLE? I read stories and they are completely fine with trying to hide the wings. Wings are big, especially angel wings. Also, when flying, please consider altitude heights. Is there a way they can breathe that high up, is there a limit to how high they can go? Just some thoughts.
Elements
Alright, hot topic. Biggest cliche: the OC is related to the Maximoffs, gets experimented on and has control over all 5 elements. Stop. No. Think of something else, please. Pietro and Wanda both have one power, (granted telekinesis is an umbrella over a bunch of things.) Why does your OC suddenly get multiple powers?
Now I understand that you want your OC to control water, fire, air, earth or (spirit?). It's cool. I'd love to. But don't let them control all of them, seriously it's not good. You've developed a Mary Sue, which no one wants to read. I mean, one is perfectly fine. You can drown someone with water droplets in the air, you could fly, you could manipulate plant life. All really good by themselves.
Telekinesis
We've gone over this one before. One, Wanda has it already, so if you're writing in the MCU, don't use it. If you aren't writing in the MCU like an AU or something along those lines, give the OC some sort of weakness with the powers, like they get headaches if they moves something too big.
High Intelligence
Like, where are the Stark kids who aren't as smart as their dad? Just saying. Now, I am guilty, guilty, guilty of using this one, but I balanced this out. Let me show you. I have two OC's in my book and they both are VERY smart, like skipped grades smart. Alexis, my main one, is smart in the whole English and psychology part. She can piece information together easily, but failed math and science classes. My other one, Calvin, is like Stark, electronic smart, but specifically electronics. Ask him to build an iron man suit, he'll fail.
I balanced them out, gave them weaknesses. Do the same. If your OC is super smart, have them be street smart, or book smart and very socially awkward.
