Before Jake and I stepped out of my car, he had a mini freak out. "Why is she here? Is she officially kicking me out of the house? Oh my god, Charlie I'm scared!"
I placed a hand on his shoulder, "I'll be here the entire time. Don't worry."
He nodded weakly at me before we both got out of the car. We walked slowly up the pathway leading to my front door.
When we got there, Mrs. Prine was looking guiltily at her shoes.
"Mom?" Jacob asked.
"Hello Jacob. Charlie," she replied.
Her blonde hair was hanging loosely at her shoulders, she wore casual blue jeans and a tshirt.
"How are you feeling?" She asked softly as she stretched a hand out to Jake.
He flinched away, "I'm fine. No thanks to you though."
"Jake, stay calm," I whispered, rubbing his back calmingly.
He nodded.
"Honey I'm sorry about your music. I had a headache last night and you just kept playing so I asked your father to go up and ask you to stop," his mother explained.
He scoffed, "Well he didn't ask me to stop. He told me I sucked. He ripped up every single piece of music I've ever owned! That was my life he ripped up. I can't back all of that sheet music! A-and you t- you told me you never wanted me!" Jacob's lip quivered and his fist clenched.
"All do respect Mrs. Prine, but I think it's best if you go," I stated sternly.
She nodded, "I understand. But I didn't want you coming home and finding out Jacob."
"Find out what?" He asked shakily.
"After you left the house- your father, he smashed your trumpet. It's broken Jacob. I'm sorry," Mrs. Prine explained before turning to walk away.
Jacob owned two trumpets. His good one remained in school at all times, since he never knew where he would be sleeping at night. The trumpet that his dad had broken, was the one he received from his Aunt as a birthday present before I met him. It was old and wasn't worth more than two hundred dollars, but it was still expensive and every instrument meant the world to Jake. Whether it was in good condition or not. So I understood when he freaked out.
"What the fuck! How dare you! First my music then my trumpet! You were never a mother to me. Neither of you ever cared about me! I can't wait to go to college so I don't have to see your conceded, snarky faces anymore! I hate you both!" Jacob screamed.
"You don't mean that," his mother said softly before stepping into her car.
