Wakatoshi had made it a mission where he would arrive at the same ice cream shop everyday for the next week, hoping that he would see the mother and son duo.
He was going to give up but on the last day of the week, he saw the familiar dark olive and brunette walking in. He watched them as they went up to the counter and paid for their order and waited two tables in front of him.
The boy took off his backpack and looked up and smiled brightly. He waved over to Wakatoshi and he did the same. Yukina looked up to see who he was waving to and her eyes widened. She nervously smiled and waved gently back. He observed her as she was talking to her son. Her chestnut hair was still beautifully wavy and her eyes were still twinkling with life.
He frowned when he observed that she was being nervous. He didn't like it when Yukina was nervous. He wanted to see that beautiful smile of hers again. He cleared his throat and made his way over to their table.
"Mind if I sit here?"
The boy's eyes gleamed with delight as his mother said it was okay after seeing his reaction.
"I didn't know you were in the city." Wakatoshi started as the ice cream came to their table.
"I've been here, Wakatoshi." Yukina scolded. "I was here for university."
Wakatoshi widened his eyes as he saw he had upset her. He was also upset with himself that he didn't know about this piece of information. "I'm sorry."
"Why are you sorry?" Yukina raised an eyebrow. "I never told you."
"It's okay." Kaito said as he was stuffing his mouth with his ice cream parfait.
"Kaito, you're making a mess." Yukina furrowed her eyebrows as she wiped the corners of his mouth.
"I never knew you had a son either." He whispered softly, trying not to scare the boy. Yukina smiled softly at him as she played with her son's hair.
"Yeah, not a lot of people knew." She replies just as softly.
"Who's the lucky guy?" He felt like throwing up once the sentence had left his lips. He watched as Yukina shifted her gaze around and remained silent. So many assumptions were running through his mind. Was it someone he knew? Was it someone that he hated? Or was it Oikawa? Instead of going to Shiratorizawa, he goes after Yukina?
"How old are you, Kaito?" Wakatoshi asked.
"Five!" The boy exclaimed as he held up four fingers.
"You're missing one." Yukina chuckled as she held up another finger. "Now that's five."Five years old? That meant she got pregnant sometime after graduation. So she was able to find someone that quickly, huh? It was no surprise really, she was someone every guy wanted after all.
His frown deepened as he was watching the two playing in front of him. This is something he wished he could have in the future. Maybe it would be possible with Aileen.
After they had finished their dessert, Yukina had excused themselves. Wakatoshi offered to give them a ride back to their place as they were heading towards the parking lot.
"You don't even have a car seat in your car." Yukina furrowed her brows.
"Ah, you are correct. Maybe next time."
"Next time?" Yukina raised an eyebrow as her boy was jumping for joy.
Wakatoshi nodded. "Let's do lunch? With Kaito as well?"
"Yay! Lunch with daddy!"Instantly, the two adults had their eyes widened. Wakatoshi couldn't believe what he just heard.
"Kaito!" Yukina yelled at him a hushed manner.
"But he is daddy, mama." Kaito pouted as he gripped the straps of his backpack tighter.Wakatoshi watched as the boy wanted to cry. But he saw something misplaced on one of the straps. There was a purple button. As he took a step closer and leaned in to see if it was really misplace, he couldn't believe it.
It was his high school button sewn onto the strap.
"Yukina," Yukina looked up to him as he couldn't take his eyes off the button, "Why is my button there?"
Yukina sighed. "Because... he is your son, Wakatoshi."
