“And, before you go on your way, please listen to the following announcements,” Mrs. DeBruhl said into the microphone. I glanced over at Ashley. She rolled her eyes in boredom, tugging at her blouse. It was at least one size too small. Before we began our first class of the day at eight in the morning, Mrs. DeBruhl did a morning prayer and announcement session with her students to kick off the morning. We prayed the Our Father and Hail Mary. Mrs. DeBruhl also spoke a few words of wisdom on her own. “All of you girls will have to attend a praying of the Rosary this Saturday at approximately six, after you eat your dinner.” The entire crowd groaned.

“There goes my date with Roscoe!” a girl behind me snapped. I turned around to glance at her suspiciously. There was only one Roscoe on the entire Vernon campus, and that Roscoe had told me on moving day that he found the perfect girl for him. Maybe things didn’t work out between the two. Interesting.

“Quiet please, ladies. The praying will take one hour and then you are free to go take part in your usual Saturday festivities. Moving on. The varsity volleyball team will have their first practice next Wednesday. You will need to speak with Coach Myers to coordinate a time for practice that works for everyone. Meet her in her office at some point today or tomorrow and tell her when you are free on Wednesday. Also, as you know, the Halloween Dance is coming up.” She paused, knowing that we would all buzz with excitement. Grace, Susan and I shared a three-way high five. We loved the Halloween Dance.

“Again, this year we will need a planning committee. It will take place on October 31, Halloween night. This planning committee will share ideas with the Vernon planning committee. We need five of you young ladies to volunteer, and the rest of the information will be addressed from there. Have I forgotten anything? I do not believe so. Please go to class now, girls. Have a nice day.”

I was practically jumping out of my skin with excitement about the dance. Most girls liked to show up and dance with the Vernon boys, but didn’t want to plan which boy I would sneak into my dorm to stay the night with me. I wanted to plan the dance.

“If I signed the five of us up for the dance committee will you join?” I asked the group.

Susan and Grace nodded. “Whatever,” Hanna said.

“I don’t care, if you want me to join, I will, Claire,” Ashley said.

“Perfect. Now let’s go talk to Mrs. DeBruhl before the spots are taken.” We strolled over to her, where she was walking back to her office. “Excuse me, Mrs. DeBruhl?” I asked lightly.

She turned around and smiled at us. I somehow was on her good side. “Why, hello ladies. Are you coming to me to sign up for the dance?” she asked.

“Yes!” We all nodded.

“Well, ladies, that is quite lovely. You have your first meeting tomorrow at two in the afternoon in my office with the Vernon committee as well. You are responsible for set up, clean up, decorations, music, and basically everything. You have over a month to get everything ready for the dance. Everything, and I mean everything, must be done at least seven days in advance of October 31st. Miss Ogner, I am going to send you outside at ten minutes to two to pick up our Vernon students. They will be at the near end of the parking lot for pickup in their van. You will introduce yourself and have a conversation with them on the way inside. Lead them into my lounge, please and thank you. The Vernon committee is made up of the following students: David Butcher, Roger Smith, Roscoe Johnson, Jonathan Ogner and Squire Burroughs.”
