“Come on, Han, are you almost done yet?” Ashley whined, doodling on her sketch pad in her lap with a black colored pencil.

“Hold on, lemme just add an outer layer of this stunning purple eye shadow and then you’re done! You look great, Ash.” Hanna then rummaged through her makeup bag looking for the eye shadow. The bag was like a black hole of makeup you could find on the set of a Marilyn Monroe movie. It was bigger than my head.

“Hanna’s right, Ash. You look really pretty. I concur,” Grace said, glancing up from her physics textbook to look at Ashley. Hanna, Ashley, Suzie and I all stared at her. “Fine. I agree.”

“I dunno what ya just said, Han. Your mouth is flappin’ like a bird about eye shadow and mascara and eyelids and blush and some word that starts with the letter ‘f’ and all that pretty girl talk,” Ashley sneered, not looking up from the sketch pad.

Hanna blushed, flattered. “You mean foundation? Is that the word that starts with ‘f’?”

“Yeah, that’s it.” Ash snapped the fingers on her left hand, as her right was clutching a colored pencil.

“Stop that!” Hanna scolded. “Your nail polish might not be dry yet!”

Ash lazily looked at her fingertips. “Nope. Nothing. They’re dry.”

Hanna dipped her eye shadow brush into a deep purple color and outlined Ashley’s eyes with it, careful not to smudge it with the blue eye shadow already on her eyelids. I didn’t even realize that she found the eye shadow in that bag of hers. “And…. ta-da!”

She spun Ashley around in her desk chair so she could see her reflection in the mirror. “Do you like it?” she asked.

“I like it, but it’s just not me,” Ash said, examining herself. She set her art supplies on the desk. Hanna did a really nice job on Ashley, and that was hard to do because Ashley wasn’t the glamorous type. Hanna was cut out like that. Ashley wasn’t. Hanna applied some glossy red lipstick, tan foundation to make her skin look flawless, light but natural mascara, a load of blue eye shadow and to top it all off, she outlined the blue with a complementary purple. Ash looked like something out of a book when Hanna was done. Out of a movie.

“You look incredible. Nice job, Han,” Grace said. “I’m gonna get back to my work in the library. See ya at dinner in our spot.”

“Bye, Grace,” we all said in unison. She threw her homework into her Chicago messenger bag and headed out.

“Yeah, I gotta do some homework for some shit course, too,” Hanna said. “Ash. You are a beautiful girl, but you could be a smash knockout if you had a good sense of style.”
