At the start of summer break...
Kenny looked out the window to look at the scenery flying by as he listened to his parents discussing something he had no interest in. He was just happy to move away from the old town he used to lived in, since his only friend there had been Nyada, his pet cat that had become a Yo-kai and stuck around to keep him company, and the only remotely interesting things there had been the library and a cementary that he occasionally went to so that he see any visiting Yo-kai since Yo-kai never seemed to stick around there, not that he could blame them. That was why he always looked forward to going to Springdale with his parents every weekend, despite the long hours it took to get there by train, since he would be able to do more stuff and not risk running into any of his classmates.
"You know, Kenny, there are a lot of Yo-kai that live in Harrisville that I saw on our last visit that we'll be able to talk to and befriend easier than back in the old town."
The Foresters had come to Harrisville before to look for a new place to live since Kenny's father had been offered a better job in Springdale and he wanted to live closer so that he didn't spend half of his day just getting to and from his job on the train, but the only places that had been available in Springdale either felt too big and empty for a family of three or too close to somewhere with constant noise, so they decided to try and look for a nice place in the country, with their search stopping in Harrisville. After they asked around, they found a place that they could live in, but they had to share the house with another family of three. Kenny heard that the family had a son around his age, but he never got a chance to meet him since his parents wanted to get back to the train station before it got dark.
"Maybe this other boy might be able to see Yo-kai too. I did see a Yo-kai hanging around the house, but I didn't get a chance to talk to them since your parents were insistant on making sure we didn't miss the train back."
Kenny knew that Nyada was trying to raise his spirits since no one in his old town could sense auras or see Yo-kai, not even his own parents. Kenny just muttered under his breath to Nyada, thankful that the train could mask his muttered words from his parents,
"Yeah, yeah. Just wait until we get there, Nyada."
Truthfully, Kenny was worried. It was easy to avoid his former classmates and ignore their whispers back in the old town, but he was going to be living in the same house as a boy that he knew nothing about other than the fact that they were both around the same age. What if the other boy couldn't see Yo-kai and if that was the case, how was he going to talk to Nyada and do his Yo-kai drawings? Could he think of a plausible explanation for his behavior? Word does travel faster in a small village than in a decently sized town, after all.
"Kenny, calm down. Everything is going to be fine. I'm sure we can find a quiet place for your research."
Kenny snapped out of his thoughts and saw Nyada already trying to uncurl his fingers out of the nervous fist that he just noticed had been made. He sighed softly as he unmade his fist and laid his hand on top of Nyada, who transfered himself into the backpack in Kenny's lap. If his parents had noticed him sighing, they would assume he was nervous about sharing a house with another kid that he didn't get a chance to meet due to the fickle scheduling of the train station and leave it at that. Kenny knew otherwise and whispered to Nyada when his parents switched to another topic about something he had no interest in,
"Nyada, it's scary how well you know me."
Nyada purred at the whispered words and said,
"Well, we have been friends for years now, both when I was alive and when I became a Yo-kai. Of course I would know you this well."
When the train stopped at Harrisville Station, Kenny picked up his backpack, followed his parents to the train door, and hopped off the train.
