I start making my way to my house, excitement rising in my chest. A memory of the advertisement for the new NerveGear makes my heart race. It had just come out a few weeks ago, and only a select few had been chosen to beta test the new game, Sword Art Online, a virtual reality game. I, NPA agent, or National Police Agency agent, Yumi Yoshitora, have actually been offered the chance to be one of the first people to play this game. That thought pushes my short legs on, and I finally reach my room, fiddling with the key, and after a moment of fumbling, I enter my room. Smiling at the opened box on my bed, I race over, plug the headset, which is needed for the game to run, along with a very powerful computer, in, and shove it onto my head. I lay down on my bed, smiling to myself. Agents never get free time like what I'm being given, which makes excitement tingle throughout me.
"Link start!" I yell, and millions of colorful bars rush towards me, and then a large 'welcome' banner floats above my head. Then, a mirror appears in front of me, and I see a small girl with yellow hair and green eyes standing in front of me. I frown at being small and go to the 'edit' section. After a while, I end up being a tall lady with purple hair put up into a ponytail with a purple ribbon and lavender eyes, and a set of purple armor that's a puffy dress with white stripes and plates, and with blown up sleeves. I type in the name Skylar, and I click the small blue 'finish' button that pops up in front of me, and white fills my vision.
I find myself standing in front of a large tower shaped like a cone broken into large bands, swords poking out of the sides like arms, and fireworks explode around the top of the funnel. I smile, but wobble forwards instead of walking, and fall flat on my face, not yet accustomed to the weird feeling of my 'new' limbs.
"Ow..." I mutter, sitting up and wiping my mouth with a hand. Surprisingly, no blood appears on my fingertips, and I try to make sense of what had happened. Brushing it off with a shrug, I get to my feet and stagger my way to the entrance of the large building. After getting used to the movements, I find my way to the marketplace of the Town of Beginnings, which is the town you start off in and walk into the store of the nearest blacksmith.
"Hello, Miss, and welcome to my shop! What can I help you with?" A man appears out of nowhere, smiling pleasantly. I smile nervously, wondering whether that was a scripted sentence or not.
"Uh, hi. Could you please show me a good sword that's light?" I open my inventory, glad to have the 100 Col that had been given to beta testers to get them off to a good start.
"Certainly," he pauses, disappearing behind the counter again and popping back up, "a rapier is probably your best bet if you want a light but an efficient sword. Here," he places the skinny bladed sword into my palms, and I examine it in awe. The handle of the sword is simple yet delicate with golden engravings, a cup surrounding most of the hilt, and the blade is a prominent pink with bends at the tip, making the point sharper than I could've asked for.
"It's beautiful! How much for it?" I smile after testing the weight.
"15 Col." He answers with a small grin. I transfer the col, which is the money system, and soon, I'm out in the fields, raising my strength and speed levels. Hiding in a tree, I jump up and swing my sword at a bird that happens to swoop by my head. It disintegrates with one hit, and a screen appears in front of me, listing the Experience and items I had received. I hear voices echoing behind me, instincts forcing me to duck down into the leaves and branches, hiding me from view.
"Aw, come on, man! I'm beggin' ya!" I hear a man exclaim from below me.
"I-I don't know.." Another, younger sounding voice trails off, sounding hesitant.
"Please?" The other begs desperately.
"...Fine." The younger one grunts.
Their conversation brings my attention, not really wanting to eavesdrop, but I do it anyway. But they don't say anything else interesting, leaving me to slump back in the tree. After getting a few more kills from in the tree, I sigh in relief at leveling to three in a day and jump from my branch. Instead of dropping to the soft grass, I feel something firm underneath me, and I hear a yelp of surprise followed by a grunt, and the ring of a sword being drawn fills my ears. Recovering from the collision, I look down with a hand to my head which had bumped into something hard, and see a man with long red hair sprawled out under me, moaning. I scramble off him, apologies flying out of my mouth.
"Oops! I'm so sorry! I didn't realize you were passing by!" I bow rapidly in embarrassment and worry. I hear a shuffle of armor and a sword being sheathed and after a moment, I glance up from my hunched state and see the two men standing in front of me. One has short black hair, who is smiling from embarrassment, and the other, who I had fallen on, is rubbing the back of his head with a relaxed smile.
"That's fine. Are you okay?" The red-haired man grins, and I nod, happy he's not mad at me.
He seems friendly.
"That's good. No one got hurt." The other man with the spiky black hair smiles as if embarrassed by his friend. I recognize their voices as being the ones from before, and I sweat at the thought of listening in on their conversation.
"I feel bad about it though," I pause, tapping my chin, "is there any way I can make it up to you?"
"Not really," the man with the red hair looks thoughtful for a moment, "but I can think of something. Just tell me why you were in the tree?" He motions to where I had fallen, and I feel my face heat up at my crazy idea.
"First I wanted to scout the area, so I climbed up the tree to get a better look. Then, I managed to get a few good swings at birds nesting or flying low enough. I guess I thought it was better to do something that most people wouldn't have thought of." I explain, resting my arms at my sides.
"That's creative. Is this your first time playing a game like this?" The man with the raven hair questions.
"Y-yeah. Though, I think it's more of thinking outside the box than anything else," I point out, smiling for a second. Then a thought popped into my head, "oh! I almost forgot. My name's Y-Skylar!" I stutter, nearly telling them my real name.
"Nice to meet ya, Skylar. I'm Klein, and this here is my friend Kirito," the man with the red hair sticks his thumb to his chest, then signals to the raven haired man. Kirito sighs, glancing at Klein. Then he swipes his right hand down, and his inventory pops up in front of him.
"It's good to meet you, but I should probably get going. Klein, if you have any trouble, just message me, okay?" Kirito smiles, holding his hand out to Klein.
"Nice! See ya later, man." Klein grins again, and Kirito turns, grabbing a small blue crystal out of his inventory. He shouts a complicated name, and a blue light surrounds him, his figure shattering into a thousand diamonds that look like glass that float into the sky.
"So, what were you doing out in the plains?" I pull strands of hair out of my mouth and hook it behind my ear, and Klein turns to me after a moment.
"Oh, I asked him for some advice on sword fighting. He showed me around for a while, and I got used to using a sword skill." The word 'sword skill' flies right over my head, so I stare at him in confusion.
"What's a 'sword skill'?" I roll the new word on my tongue, feeling as though I'm a toddler in this world. Klein looks at me skeptically, and when he sees me staring blankly at him, he looks at the sky.
"Uh, it's kind of like a superpower, I guess. It's a skill that comes with your sword," he pauses, opening his inventory, and taking his sword from his sheath. His sword is a short looking Samurai sword, the blade curving ever so slightly, and the handle is adorned with twines of wire engraved into the hilt, "let me show you."
