Chapter Thirty

The next day is back to school.

I feel like some sort of pariah for some reason, even when Klein is at my side, and even when I'm with all of my greatest friends. The day gradually passes, minute by minute, hour by hour until subsequently the closing bell rings, signaling the end of the day. I had told everyone what had occurred, or at least everyone who knew what happened, and reduced their uneasiness by saying she vowed not to do anything disastrous. I hasten through the foyer, moderately shouldering my way through the mob jostling to exit the school. I reach my locker, spinning in the combination and then swinging it open, arranging the folders and notebooks I need for homework in my backpack after straining on my toes and shifting the handle off of the latch, and then setting the additional supplies in the locker in the conventional procedure. When I push the door shut, I turn to see Klein grinning down at me.

"Ha, good try, but you didn't quite get me this time. Maybe try something new if you want to scare me." I tease, hoisting my bag over my shoulder, and his grin dips at the corners, seeming thoughtful, and he hums inaudibly.

"Hmm. If standing there doesn't work, then maybe I should....yeah, I should definitely." This makes me glance at him, inconsiderably irritated he didn't say it out loud, and partially interested of what he's going to venture.

"Wh--" I'm disrupted by his hands flying to my sides, and he starts tickling me, making me wiggle with a squeak, holding in the giggles trying to rise from my mouth. Some escape and he proceeds tickling until I'm able to break away, panting for air. "K-Klein!" I chuckle, out of breath, as I turn to him falteringly.

"What? You said to try something new, so I tried something new." He shrugs nonchalantly, straightening from his leaning form.

"Yeah, but that's making me laugh, not scaring me." I point out, and he moves towards me with his hands elevated, making me squeal and spring back, covering my sides protectively.

"You were saying?" He sniggers.

"Whatever!" I whine as we start walking out of the school, my eyes following his hands, surmise loitering in my stomach.

"I'm done for today, Skylar." He chuckles, folding his arms in front of him as we round the corner. I roll my eyes, insisting I wasn't worried about that, but as soon as he raises his hand, I flinch, stepping away from him. "I'm done, alright?" He tucks his hand back under the other. I stay silent as Klein splits off down the track in front of his house, waving to me as he closes the door behind himself. Sighing, I continue down the path until I change direction to follow the pavement to my front door, opening the door and closing it behind me, calling out to mom that I am home. I tramp up the stairs, opening my bedroom door, and slumping back on my bed and breathing noisily. I sit up when the floor creaks and see Aika standing there, smiling at me.

"Hey, Aika. What's up?" I prop myself up on my elbows as she steps into the room, bowing politely.

"Um, I was wondering if maybe you could take me to talk to Klein? I know this might sound offensive, but I just wanted to get on good terms with him, considering what I did..." She watches me sit up suitably, and I gaze at her for a time, causing her eyes to shimmer with tears.

"Sure. Why not? We can go soon, I just have to call him real quick," I hesitate drawing my phone out of my pocket, and punching in his number, pressing it up to my ear. Klein soon picks up, answering the phone with a startled tone.

"Hey, Skylar. What's up?"

"Well, you know the impo-- I mean, Aika?" I had told Klein her name recently, granting me the okay to use her name instead of 'the imposter'. "Well, she wants to meet up sometime and 'get on good terms'. Is that okay with you?"
