Chapter 2 - Meeting the Family

I walked into my house. My family lives in a small, or 'cosy' as my dad says, house in Manhattan.

I threw my school bag up the hall, planning to get it later. I walked to the fridge and grabbed out the block of chocolate that I hid at the back of the fridge.

"I wonder how the hell you aren't fat." I turned to my big brother and said, "Says the person who ate a whole birthday cake."

He glared at me. "I was like three," he pointed out.

I just stared at him. My brother was 20, jobless, broke and single. His name was Adrian Fonder. He spends most of his time either pestering me when possible or going to parties and getting drunk. I have had to save him on many occasions.

He would ring me and slur, "Hi Sis, can you come pick me up, pretty please?"

I would have to just ask him where he was, jump in my car and pick him up. It usually ended up with him cleaning out my car to deprive it of the vomit.

Adrian has the same light brown hair and green eyes as me. I pushed my way past him to come face to face with my stepmother, Stephanie.

"I got a call from your school, do you know what that would be about?" Under his breath Adrian said, "You're fucked."

An hour ago, the stepmonster finished her lecture with a, "YOU'RE GROUNDED FOR A WEEK!" I have no idea why the hell she has to butt into everything.

I am now sitting in my room, after crying in the shower, attempting to do my Science Homework. It made no sense at all so I opted to stare at the tree outside my window. I used it in a lot of situations like last night; escaping to the party. I was dozing off when Elliot's head popped up outside my window.

I flinched. "Oh hi," I said casually.

"Hi," he said as he easily manoeuvred his way into my bedroom.

I frowned, "Why are you coming through my window exactly?"

He rolled his eyes. "The stepmonster wouldn't let me in."

I laughed at the nickname we gave Stephanie.

"She said you were grounded." He raised an eyebrow.

"The stupid school told her about my little nap in class."

He chuckled and said inquiringly, "How long?"

I sighed, "A week."

After that, the afternoon consisted mostly of complaining about Stephanie. He helped me with my homework too. "Oh my god, where did the time go?!" Elliot exclaimed as he checked the clock on his phone.

"Mum is gonna kill me! I have to go. See you tomorrow."

I smiled. "Good luck! Bye."

He stepped out of the window, carefully placing his foot on the tree and went down. I watched him until he got to his white Suzuki Swift and drove away. With nothing else to do I walked down to the kitchen, warmed up some left-over spaghetti and ate it in front of the TV. When I was done I rinsed my plates and dawdled up to my room, feet slapping on the wooden floor. I was practically asleep before my head touched the pillow.
