"Thank God... She's waking up."
I blink open my eyes, adjusting to the bright ceiling light above me. Then I remembered.
The ambush. My team.
I quickly sat up in the bed, and my senses went on high alert. "Where am I." I demanded without knowing who was in the room.
"Easy, Lin. You're back on Infinity." Zack soothes. I turn to the left and saw him sitting in a chair beside my bed. Dark circles surrounded his eyes, indicating that he hasn't been getting much sleep and that he's probably been here just as long as me.
"My team. Are they really..?" I dared not to finish the sentence. I knew the answer, but I didn't want it to be true.
He gets up from his seat and walks to the side of my bed. He takes my hand and places their dog tags on it. "I'm... sorry, but they are."
"No.." I hung my head in shame, clutching on to the tags. "It's my fault that they died."
"What?" Zack says in surprise. "No... No, it's not your fault."
"But it is." I insisted. "When I saw that the Jackel snipers weren't there, it should have been a red flag to gain higher ground." I grip the sheets of the bed. "They wouldn't have died if I was a better leader."
"Lin, you don't know what you're saying. They knew the risks of the drop, and they trusted you."
I scoffed. "Yeah, and look where that got them."
I climbed out of bed, and Zack looks at me with concern. "Whoa, easy. Docs didn't say that you could-" I shoot him an I-don't-care look and walked over to the closet. I pulled out a training uniform and went into the bathroom to change, slamming the door behind me.
"Wait, where are you going?" He asks me as I come out. I went to my armor and pulled out my pistol and ID card. I pulled out the mag to check for ammo and cocked it once before strapping it to my side.
"Lindsey." Zack grabs my arm. I pull my arm away from him and answer. "To shoot something."
I stuffed the tags into my pocket and walked out of the room towards the Shooting Range. As I walked through the halls, people took one good look at me and sadly turned their heads away.
I hold back the tears threatening to breakthrough. I can't show that I'm weak.. vulnerable. I have to stay strong. I am an ODST, after all...
I stopped in front of the door to the shooting range and swiped my ID on the keypad. It rolls into the wall, and I step inside.
A few Marines were already here, either testing new weapons or training. I found a lane at the corner of the house and slid on the protective glasses provide there.
I unstrapped my Magnum and aimed it at the target in front of me. Then I fired.
Bullseye.
Again.
Another bullseye.
Then I see it right in front of me.
The Zealot.
It's burning amber eyes that lust for blood. It's yellow and purple armor damaged from the many battles. The indent from one of my bullets on its helmet and in its hand, a glowing white Energy Sword that killed two members of my team.
It starts walking towards me, and I begin to shoot my Magnum at its head rapidly. The bullets go through the warrior, not even fazing the Zealot as it walks closer.
Then clicking.
I blinked, and the Zealot is nowhere to be found. Then I realize that I emptied the entire clip. I look at the target, and every shot hit the bullseye.
