Back when he was younger, Hawlucha never thought that he would ever want to be in a relationship with anyone. His life was supposed to be about battling and becoming the strongest fighting-type Pokemon he could be. What use did he have for romance? In his opinion, relationships only distracted you from focusing on the actual important things in life.
His old friends had always insisted that he didn't really believe that romance was useless, and that the real reason he didn't want to be in a relationship was because he hadn't found the right person yet. While he could certainly see their point, Hawlucha remained steadfast in his beliefs. In a way, their argument only validated them; if there was only one "right person" out of the billions to choose from, it could take years until he found that person. Why waste time doing that when there was training to be done?
However, that all changed when he saw Greninja for the first time. He was getting ready to battle Ash for the first time, and was expecting to go up against Pikachu even though he knew it would probably be a losing effort. Hawlucha was therefore both surprised and somewhat relieved when Ash decided that he was going to use someone else instead. The Aztec bird had watched curiously as his eventual (although he hadn't known it at the time) trainer pulled a Pokeball off his belt, releasing a tiny blue frog from inside.
Now, Froakie didn't look all that different from the rest of his species, and Hawlucha had seen plenty in his time. Yet somehow, he just couldn't take his eyes off him.
He knew he wanted him.
Unfortunately, he also knew that Froakie didn't feel the same way.
Slowly, Hawlucha began focusing less on his goals of becoming a better fighter and more on getting the frog Pokemon's approval. In all honesty, he didn't even realize what he was doing at first. By the time he did notice anything, his life was already completely revolved around Greninja and what he thought of him.
Greninja meant everything to him, which made everything else feel almost...meaningless.
Perhaps some would have been concerned by such a realization, but Hawlucha couldn't have cared less.
And now, after months of trying, he had finally gotten through to the frog-ninja Pokemon. They were finally together, even after all the rejections that Greninja had made Hawlucha suffer through. He had gotten what he wanted at last, and he would be damned if he let anyone else get in the way.
