The Doctor looked past me in horror.
"Talia, listen to me. Do NOT look behind you. Take Anthony & get to the TARDIS. Quickly," he ordered, still staring at what was behind me.
I struggled to hoist Tony up & limped toward the broom closet. The Doctor did not move.
"Doctor, what are you doing?"
I watched him plant five black marks on the back of his hand.
"Do you still have the key to the TARDIS?" he asked & I realized what he was doing. He was being the diversion.
"No, you do not get to sacr--"
"Get Anthony to safety."
"And what about me? I can't fly the TARDIS, can I?"
"She will take you where you need to be, but you need to hurry. They're right behind you, Talia. And when I'm gone...Well she'll shut herself down. So don't get yourself stuck in the wrong time..."
This was it. Fight or flight, right? Only the choice wasn't mine this time. It was the Doctor's, apparently. And I was bound to obedience...but not today.
Without giving it a second thought, I carefully ran to the closet with my eyes to the ground, set Tony down beside the door & turned to see the Doctor for one last time. He stood straight up & we smiled together, exactly the way we had all those years ago--only much much more definitively.
"Goodbye, Doctor."
His smile fell when I began to open the door without the body of my lifeless brother.
