Chapter 2

Present Day...

"I cannot believe you're actually moving! Everyone knows that small towns are just country, grass, and old people or children who haven't quite been able to escape yet."

Katelyn sighed. This was not the first time Laney had said this, and though she understood Laney was going to miss her – it was a mutual feeling – it was starting to get a little annoying.

"It was your idea in the first place, remember?" Katelyn reminded her, earning a groan.

"In my defense, it was a good idea at the time. Ian has respected the restraining order, so you don't have to go anywhere now!"

"Well, I want to. I don't want to stay in the same town as him, and I'm excited for this new job. You know how much I love animals, I can't wait to be in a job where I can see them all the time." Katelyn folded another shirt and placed it in her suitcase, and when Laney didn't say anything, she sighed again. "Look, I know you're sad, but it's not like I'm going to Canada. I'll be literally two hours away, it's not that bad."

"Not that bad?!" Laney screeched, and Katelyn found herself glad that Laney was currently on speakerphone as opposed to right by her ear. "Right now, for Vodka Friday, you just have to walk from your building to mine. It's a five-minute walk, if that. Two hours is an eternity away!"

"I know, I know. We'll just change it from Vodka Friday to... I don't know, Whiskey Weekend. We'll do one every other week or something."

Katelyn was set to start her new job as a receptionist at a veterinary clinic in a week, however she was heading out early to get used to the town and see about getting into an apartment or her own place. She didn't have a huge savings account, but the money saved from not needing to take out any loans, and the jobs she'd held throughout the past four years, she had enough to rent somewhere. Martin had given her permission to stay with him as long as she needed, but she was ready for independence.

Her roommate, the last college one she'd ever have, had left the day before. They hadn't been close exactly, so there had been no emotional goodbyes or overstretched farewells. A simple "have a good one", and she'd been alone.

"Ugh. I just don't see why you can't leave next week!" Laney complained.

"I already told you, I want to get set up. Besides, I also told you that you could come with me and help me move in, but you said that would be like saying you approve of the move."

"And I stand by that, but I also didn't think the time would come this fast. Has it really already been three months?"

Katelyn looked around the dorm space she'd inhabited, trying to make sure she'd gotten everything cleared away and packed. There were a couple of suitcases, some boxes, and a small bag of the things she'd needed this morning to get ready.

"I guess so. It has gone by way too fast," Katelyn admitted. Everything was ready to go, and now she just had to figure out how to get it from her dorm room to her car. "Speaking of... any chance you want to come help me load up?"

"What part of "I don't want you to move" do you not understand?"

"Simple, the part where your longtime best friend begs you to help, so now you have to."
