Chapter 17

Hours later, Declan was exhausted. Questions had been asked. Honest people just trying to deal with the shock of the afternoon had provided helpful answers. All three cats had been treated and were currently under observation, though two of them had been transferred to the better equipped emergency clinic outside of town. But the main thing Declan had figured out about the whole thing was how shallow the wounds had been. The initial injury itself would not lead to death. If found in time, as the three cats had been, they'd be left only with a few stitches and eventually a scar. Bleeding out could have killed them, but it hadn't.

Which also told Declan the attacks had occurred mere minutes before each owner discovered their respective pets.

According to all three, they'd been running errands. Not together, but that had been when the cats had been left alone.

Declan didn't like how perfect the timing was for it all. It had been scary enough to cause a small panic, but quiet enough to mean no one knew what was going on.

It also meant Ian knew the people. He'd been in and around the town, learned the members of the community and their schedules. He'd made sure it would turn out somewhat alright in the end.

Cursory reports from Jane and Bill confirmed no one in any of the neighborhoods had seen a thing as most of them had been either at work or out of the house organizing their own lives. He planned on doing his own investigations, seeing if anyone remembered anything further in a couple of days.

It didn't matter, he guessed, seeing as they already knew who the culprit was. But it would have been nice to have a current sketch of what Ian looked like now. A lot could change in a person's appearance in a couple of years.

He hadn't been home yet. Though technically he'd been off today, he was sat in plain clothes at his desk, typing up all the notes he and Martin had made from the clinic. Normally, he'd be happy to pass this off to someone, anyone, else, but he was hoping he'd pick up on something more going through it all again.

That hope was fading fast.

"What are you still doing here?" Miles asked, slapping a hand over Declan's back. "Thought you'd be long gone to be with your girl."

Declan frowned. "It sounds creepy when you say it like that. She's an adult, she's not a girl."

"Point remains. Why are you here and not wherever she is?"

"Maybe I like working."

Miles gave him a side eye. "If you like working more than you like being with your woman, you need to re-evaluate your life."

He was right. Declan knew it, and knew there was more to why he hadn't left his desk or checked his phone. He just couldn't get over the stupid fact that Katelyn hadn't told him about the calls, though if he was being honest with himself, that was only a small part of it. The truth of the matter was, he wasn't happy with the reason she hadn't told him.

I don't have to tell you every tiny detail about my life.

Considering he'd been spending the weekend trying to figure out a way to be involved in every tiny part of her life, that had been a slap in the face.

It's not like we're serious or anything.

He'd thought she'd been on the same page, or at least close to it, as he was. Clearly he'd been wrong about that.

"Guess I should get home," Declan admitted, reluctantly. He didn't want to talk about this with anyone other than Katelyn, had a feeling if he tried they'd call him crazy, so he'd lost his only out.
