Chapter Three
Katelyn was dead on her feet.
No, that was putting it mildly. She'd died on her feet about three hours into the five she'd put in, and now it had finally calmed down as the clinic was ready to close for the day.
She slumped into the swivel desk chair and let out a sigh, rubbing a hand over the straining muscles in the back of her neck. "God, I need a massage right now."
When Mark didn't reply, she opened her eyes and looked at him, realizing he was staring at her.
"What?" She asked, feeling a little self-conscious.
Mark shook his head. "You just helped me through one of the biggest shit-storms I've dealt with since I opened the clinic, and all you have to say is I need a massage?"
Katelyn frowned, not seeing the problem. "Is that bad? I enjoy being busy, so really my only problem is this knot in my neck. I'll be honest though, it would have been easier if I'd been able to learn the system first." She said the words with mock accusation, making Mark chuckle.
"Well, sorry to disappoint, but usually we're a little more organized than this. Today we had the unfortunate combination of being double booked since I was taking two different schedules, and yesterday there was a report on the news about how dogs can get AIDS from dog parks. So of course everyone wanted me to make sure their dog didn't have AIDS." Mark smirked, amusement clear in his eyes.
She tilted her head in confusion. "What's funny about that?"
The smirk changed to a grin. "Dogs can't get AIDS. It's a human virus. Sure, there's a dog version of it, but it's easily treated with some antibiotics. So, all those checkups today were essentially a waste of time and money for everyone involved. Which reminds me, I'll have to give you a mock-up email to send out to everyone about it."
Katelyn couldn't help laughing. "You got it. But that's also good to know." She looked around at the reception desk, noticing the scattered papers, the post it notes covering the surface. "You know, I may just put in another couple of hours so I don't have to do this tomorrow. It would also give me a chance to learn the system in my own time."
"No way, I'm not letting you work overtime. It'll make me feel bad. Especially since you weren't even supposed to start for a week," Mark argued, but Katelyn insisted.
"Oh, relax. I just wanted to get to know the town better, and what better way to learn than by meeting everyone through their pets?"
Katelyn rolled her shoulders a couple of times, knowing that she should really just find a nice bed to lay in for twelve hours, but one glance at the mess on the desk told her she'd regret it in the morning.
"You're not wrong," Mark sighed, running his hand through his hair. "Okay, fine. But I'm ordering us food, and you have to come in an hour later tomorrow. Deal?"
She grinned, sitting up a little straighter. "Free food and I get to sleep in? You just became the best boss I've ever had. What are we eating?"
"I'll call Declan and get him to pick us up some of the best this town has to offer. Remember Carla? She came in earlier today with the kittens?"
Katelyn let out a small sigh, recalling the two little tabby kittens who had crawled onto her shirt and settled there for a good twenty minutes.
