Chapter 6
Declan wished he could say the past couple of weeks went by quickly, but that would be a lie. He hadn't been able to think of an excuse to stop by his brother's clinic, and whenever he'd tried to get one, Mark had been busy.
Each day he wanted an excuse, and each day he wondered why he bothered with the ruse. He wanted to see Katelyn. He knew it, yet he still managed to try and convince himself and Mark, and if he was honest anyone who asked, that there was no interest there.
He stared at the paperwork he needed to file for the underage drinking charge he'd had to deal with just an hour ago. He tried to give the kids warnings – it was too small a town to want to arrest anyone every time they got caught – but when they decided to start driving after drinking...
He let out a groan, reviewing the notes he already had.
Paul Orsen, a just-turned-eighteen-year-old who had already been warned twice, had decided to steal some of his daddy's hard whiskey, then take a ride around the neighborhood in his beat up old Ford.
Declan was just glad no one was hurt, and that he'd been able to catch Paul before any real damage could be done. His BAC, blood alcohol concentration, had been 0.11 – too high to be driving at the very least.
Paul was locked in one of the in-station cells, passed out on the cot inside. It had taken only a couple of minutes of muttering about something or another before it had happened, and now he was snoring.
A quick glance at the time helped him realize part of the reason he was feeling crankier than normal; it was seven o'clock in the evening and he hadn't eaten in a few hours.
Sighing, he glanced around at the station. There was an interrogation room down the hall that had been used mostly for pranks, and further down was the archive room, full of boxes and papers from the times when the town had once been a more integral part of the bigger city surrounding it. These days it was mostly being filled with individual papers and files.
"Hey, Jane," he called, grabbing the attention of Officer O'Malley.
"What's up?" She came over to his desk. The only person with an office was Martin, but Declan didn't mind. It wasn't like he needed a lot of privacy most of the time anyway.
"I'm going to Carla's; do you want me to bring you back something?"
Jane gave him a look, one that made him question his intelligence. Of course she would like something; no one turned down Carla's food unless they were sick. Even then it was unlikely. "Deluxe combo meal, diet coke and curly fry options."
Declan nodded. "Got it. Who else is here tonight?"
Jane shrugged. "Martin left already. I'm heading home at eleven, but Warren Black should be my cover. Oliver Itschell is on patrol with Bill Jiles... I think that's it for tonight."
Declan nodded. "Alright just wanted to make sure I wasn't going to piss off anyone by not remembering to bring them something." He locked down his computer and grabbed his jacket. "I'll be back within an hour. Call me if I'm needed."
Jane just laughed. "Paul is the most dramatic thing to happen since that time Norman Trent was bought in and he admitted that his name was Trent Norman, but since he was always Norman in the military, it didn't occur to him we'd get them confused."
