Chapter 8
Katelyn wanted nothing more than to sleep for three days straight, but she knew that wasn't going to happen any time soon. She couldn't even go straight to sleep when she got home after work as she was back to looking online for places to rent. She'd love to drive around, see if anywhere was only advertising through a sign outside, but she just didn't have the energy for it.
She'd already had to bail on dinner with Jason and Sandra – who had pointed out they'd honestly forgotten about the whole dinner plan and agreed to reschedule one day in the future when they were less exhausted. She hadn't even been able to get her daily Carla burger in, and she was pretty sure she was suffering withdrawals already. Whatever Carla put in those things was addicting.
Instead, Katelyn was sat on the sofa with listing after listing of unaffordable or unlivable properties on her laptop while she waited for Laney to call. Katelyn had already sent the text saying she was home, which meant within the next twenty minutes Laney would be demanding the details Katelyn had promised earlier.
Her phone buzzed and a quick glance at the message let Katelyn know Laney was going to have to call much later, as in tomorrow, as her boss had taken on more than he could handle and she was in overtime to fix it. Unsurprising, but disappointing. Still, couldn't be helped, and it allowed Katelyn to focus on the apartment hunt.
She'd been in town roughly three weeks at this point, and while living with Martin wasn't too bad, she was ready to be on her own. She'd known intellectually when she seriously decided to move here it would take a little time, but she was impatient.
The jangle of keys unlocking the front door made her look up. "Hey, Martin. How was work?"
He sighed. "Same old, same old. But there was some good news. Jane O'Malley, one of my officers, her friend's son got a new job and is moving out of his duplex. He just needs someone to take over the lease. I have the number for the landlady and some pictures of the place if you're interested?" He waved his phone around.
Katelyn stood up fast, grabbing the phone. She took a few minutes to scroll through the few pictures. It wasn't a huge place, a simple one bed, one bath with a decent kitchen/living space. Not too big, just perfect for someone who would be living alone. It didn't appear to have any major issues, wasn't too old, and the fact that it was a recommendation from someone whose judgment she trusted helped.
"Definitely interested. Can I get the number?" She felt a little excitement as Martin sent her the information and she sent her own text stating her name and interest in the duplex. She wasn't sure if the place was even in her price range, but she wasn't against going to take a look.
The quick response back was a surprise. "Alright, the landlady said she can show me the place tomorrow at eleven a.m., so I'll just see if Mark will let me take a slightly early lunch." She looked up at Martin. "Thanks for this. Hopefully it works out."
Martin gave her a brief one-armed hug. "Keep me posted. I'm showering and eating. You need anything?"
Katelyn shook her head. "Nah, I'm good. Thanks though."
"Alright. I probably won't see you for a couple of days just because of my schedule so let me know how the visit goes tomorrow."
"Will do. Night."
Katelyn shut down her laptop and made her way to her room. It wasn't too late but all she wanted to do now that she didn't have to look through apartment listings or talk to Laney was sleep.
