Chapter 20

Three whole weeks passed in a relatively boring state. While it should have probably made her relax a little, Katelyn instead felt more tense, unsure if it meant the whole thing was already over (unlikely) or if they were in a false sense of calm (more likely).

A stack of papers beside her made her jump.

"Chill, it's just me," Hannah said, taking the chair next to her.

It was mid-afternoon on a Thursday. With Jason back full time, Hannah and Mark had been given a slight reprieve to the craziness that had been present when Katelyn had first started. Everything seemed to have settled into a steady rhythm. While part of her missed the hectic schedule, she'd been part of when she'd started the job, she now got a little more time to enjoy the work and talk to the people bringing their pets in.

It was a good rhythm.

Didn't hurt that, for the past week and a half, she'd ended up in bed with Declan one way or another. She'd told him to keep the key, had a second spare made to give to Martin just in case, and he'd let himself into her place more than once, so he could be there when she was home from work.

It was weird, but at the same time it felt completely right. On the nights he was working, she'd gone to his after her shift ended just to keep it even. And okay, maybe part of it was because he'd admitted he liked seeing her in his shirt and bed.

Lost in the memory of the last time she'd spent the night at his, she barely heard Hannah trying to get her attention.

"I'd ask if you were okay, but that was your 'I'm remembering sex with Declan' face so I'm guessing you're a hell of a lot better than just 'okay'," Hannah teased.

They'd gotten closer over the last month or so, and Katelyn just flashed a satisfied smile as a response.

"Yeah, exactly. So, I had a point I was going to bring up." Hannah bit her lip, looking excited. "My boyfriend's coming into town in a couple of weeks, and I'd love for you to meet him!"

Katelyn raised her eyebrows. "Seriously? I'll finally get to meet this guy? You haven't even told me his name!"

Hannah laughed. "It's James, and yes you can finally meet him. Not tomorrow or next Friday, but the Friday after that is when he's driving down. He'll be here for just over a week so at least one of the nights you have to come over for dinner. Deal?"

"Definitely. Just let me know the best day."

"Perfect!" She reached into the draw she used and began collecting her bag.

Katelyn glanced at the day's appointments and frowned. "When did you book the afternoon off?"

"Yesterday just after you left. I need a check-up and my doctor managed to fit me in last minute, thank God."

"You're okay though? Nothing wrong?"

Hannah tilted her head, studying her. Then smiled. "No, nothing wrong. Just a check-up I've been postponing. But I really have to go, I'm running late. I'll see you tomorrow."

Hannah left, leaving Katelyn to go back to organizing the morning appointment's documentation.

It was uncharacteristically quiet. Another glance at the schedule told her the next hour would remain that way baring any emergencies or walk-ins.

"I don't know about you, but I need another day of sleep," Jason said, taking the seat Hannah had vacated and yawning. "This full-time thing is a lot harder than I thought it would be."
