Chapter 13
Three weeks had passed, and Katelyn had settled into a comfortable rhythm with her life. She'd finally gotten used to jogging in the morning, had even been able to almost double her distance so she could enjoy Carla's burgers and whatever experiments she concocted. A couple of days after work, Hannah would come over and they'd talk about work or life in general. Mark had even been convinced a week ago to join them seeing as Jason had rejoined the practice on a part-time basis, and they'd felt Mark had earned one night to relax. At least one night a week, Katelyn made sure she had dinner with Martin. Her mom had called exactly once since she'd been in town, and the call had ended the same way as all other calls did – Jacquelyn hanging up after being denied money. And every Friday night, Katelyn called Laney to catch up.
But the one thing that was still weird to her, that she still couldn't quit get over, was that she'd been seeing Declan as often as she could for the past month. Overall, maybe it hadn't been too long, but it was a hell of a lot longer than any other guy she'd been with since Ian.
They just never seemed to run out of things to talk about, and her libido wasn't even close to being done with him yet. What that meant, she wasn't sure, but she wasn't about to question it all too deeply. For whatever it was worth, she'd only known the guy about a month and a half.
The last thing that had taken place over the last few weeks was an increase in the 'Caller Unknown' calls. Despite unsuccessful attempts to block it, the caller had now reached once-a-day status. Nothing had been said when she'd answered, but as they'd come in more frequently, she'd stopped picking it up. Declan had been with her once when she'd declined it, and she'd told him honestly she thought it was a telemarketer. She hadn't mentioned the calls frequency, not wanting him to question it like he had the flowers that had been left when she moved in. She'd been in bed with him naked at the time, she hadn't wanted to deal with him asking things she wasn't ready to answer.
It was Friday night, the end of a successful week with a plan to kick back and relax. Thanks to her Bluetooth, she was able to talk to Laney as she drove back home from the store.
"Is Declan coming over tonight?" Laney asked, as Katelyn made her way out of the slightly more populated roads and into the quiet of the town she'd grown to love. There was a convenience store in June Springs, but she had to go a little outside of it to reach the Walmart that held her favorite ice cream.
"I wish. I have to wait until tomorrow night seeing as he doesn't get off until the middle of the night. His work schedule sucks sometimes."
"I bet. I just can't believe you haven't called it all off yet. I'm going to have to meet this guy at this rate," Laney teased.
Katelyn laughed. "I know, it's weird. But I like this guy, and for however long I get him I'm going to enjoy it. Can't do much more than that."
"Are you thinking you'll ask him to be your boyfriend? Officially?"
Katelyn made a face, even knowing Laney couldn't see. "Can we use a word other than boyfriend? It just makes me think of high school, it feels too... juvenile."
"Ugh, come on, Katelyn. Don't avoid the question. Is this getting serious?"
Katelyn turned on to her street and pulled into the driveway of her place. Labels had a really bad habit of changing everything, and she liked where her and Declan were too much to risk that just yet. They were friends with benefits in the truest sense of the word. Since Ian she'd stayed away from the relationships, and she wasn't quite sure she was ready to enter back into that specific dynamic. So, no, it couldn't be more serious between her and Declan.
