The eighth track of Pretty. Odd. narrates the story of two polar opposites falling in love. It's an interesting take on a love song because the moon and sun were not given specific characteristics, allowing the listener to fill in the missing parts as they please. It is thought to be about Ryan Ross' relationship with then-girlfriend Keltie Collen.
When the moon fell in love with the sun
All was golden in the sky
All was golden when the day met the nightThe only time the moon and the sun are both in the sky is during sunrise or sunset, both of which turn the sky golden – a color often associated with happiness. The color of the sky reflects the emotional state of the characters, and reinforces the upbeat tone of the song.
Golden skies at sunset is used as imagery here, as well as a metaphor for two people falling in love. The two knew they were meant for each other, and their lives became "golden." In poetry, summer is often the season most associated with people's golden days, careless romances, and blissful youth.
When the sun found the moon
She was drinking tea in a garden
Under the green umbrella trees
In the middle of summerThis analogy works two ways: It can be seen as the two polar opposite people falling in love but also as the literal moon and sun meeting. The moon was seen under the umbrella tree because during a sunset the moon can be seen "under" the treeline, but during the sunset, the sun is on its way out of the sky.
When the moon found the sun
He looked like he was barely hanging on
But her eyes saved his life
In the middle of summer (summer)In contrast to the moon, who's characterized as being put together and having her life in order, the sun is characterized as falling apart, and a mess. Then, when they met and fell in love, their situations balanced out, and the sun found himself better off than he'd been in a long time.
So he said, "Would it be all rightIf we just sat and talked for a little whileIf in exchange for your timeI give you this smile?"So she said, "That's OKAs long as you can make a promiseNot to break my little heartOr leave me all alone in the summer."Well he was just hanging aroundThen he fell in loveAnd he didn't know howBut he couldn't get outJust hanging aroundThen he fell in love
He wants to talk with the girl to build their relationship. Although she is willing to spend time with him, she is afraid of getting her heart broken. She doesn't want to waste her energy, emotions or time on a relationship that will end.
Although the boy wasn't actively looking for a relationship, he ended up falling in love with her. He tried to talk himself out of it, most likely because he was afraid of falling in love .
Many relationships that begin in the summer end quickly, and relationships that begun at other times of the year may end due to shifting schedules, particularly for people who are still in school.
In addition, since the girl is the moon and the boy is the sun, her fears about getting left alone in the summer could tie to the way that the change in seasons affects the length of the day. Due to the tilt of the earth's axis , days are longer in the summer, meaning that the night is shorter and there is less time for the moon.
