"Behind the Sea", originally titled "Sushi in a Tuxedo, in the Clams Casino", is the eleventh track of Pretty. Odd. and has a nautical theme with an abundance of vivid imagery. It discusses creativity and the freedom to express it.

A daydream spills from my corked head

Breaks free of my wooden neck

Ross generally keeps his thoughts to himself, as if a cork were preventing them from escaping. His music serves as an outlet for Ryan to express his feelings and let his dreams run wild.

Wood is usually very stable and sturdy, which can come in handy when something needs to stay in place. Calling his neck "wooden" shows how trapped his daydreams and thoughts are – they're firmly rooted and aren't very likely to "break free."

The picture Ryan's painting is one of serenity and utter beauty.

The setting (ie. the "sleeping waves") is likely representative of his mind, and how he feels at peace with himself. His creativity glides over the normally rough edges of his mind and creates a harmonious environment.

He then compares his aforementioned "daydream" to bobbing bait for nearby cod , possibly meaning he likes to mull over his thoughts like a cod would bait.

  Floating flocks of candled swans
Slowly drift across wax ponds

Ryan uses quite a lot of imagery to represent his usually-bottled-up thoughts.

Swans are generally considered graceful and calm, so by comparing his thoughts to a flock of swans, he's showing how when he lets himself loose and gets lost in his own mind, his thoughts flow freely. Then, he adds on by calling the swans "candled" and saying they "drift across wax ponds", which furthers the idea of his mind being balletic and refined. Candles are practically the epitome of calmness; they're closely associated with relaxation, they often have soothing scents, and their cooled candle wax is smooth to the touch.
