As you go through life, you learn a lot. You learn everything from how to walk and talk, to how to do algebra and drive. You're never going to get through life if you don't learn and adapt to your surroundings, although if it were just between you and me, I knew I was never going to use algebra and its quite easy to get around actually learning that one.
Some things are fun to learn, others not so much. Right now was definitely the ladder.
What I was learning?
Well, I was learning that sitting on a bus for 6 hours, riding further and further from everything you knew with an angry looking man in the front staring at you every few seconds and an even angrier looking teen behind you, surely killing their ear drums with the music that I could clearly hear pouring out of their earbuds, really freaking sucks.
I shifted in my seat for the thousandth time, earning myself a sharp look from Mr. Sour pants in the front. I let out a sigh and looked out the window, watching the scenery fly by as I let my mind wander to how I got myself in this situation.
I was always a fairly good kid. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't an angel, I got myself into trouble several times throughout my life but it was never too bad. Well, unless you count the time that pretty much ruined my entire family's life but hey, I definitely didn't ask for that one.
I was probably the last person you would imagine when you hear '16 year old on a bus riding to a correctional facility for disabled or injured difficult teens'.
That might not be exactly how they described it to my parents but from what I got, that's pretty much what it is.
I like to keep a positive outlook on things so maybe I should refer to it as some sort of summer resort, a long vacation if you will?
I cast a look to the brooding man in the front and sighed. Yeah, I don't think even I would be capable of believing that one.
The bus made a turn and it's tires met bumpy gravel, quite the change from the smooth pavement we had been on for the past three hours.
I gripped onto the seat to keep me from rocking back and forth as I watched out the window, hoping we were finally somewhere where I could get out and stretch my legs.
A medium sized stone building came into view and I let out a sigh of relief when I saw several other busses parked in a row by the side of the building. We pulled to a stop and the man in the front stood up.
"We are stopping here while we wait for the other busses to arrive. You two are to follow me into the building. There are restrooms if you need but otherwise you are to take a seat somewhere and wait." His deep voice rang out and I stood up, hiking my backpack up onto my shoulder.
The girl behind me stood up and trailed after me as I followed the man. I took a deep breath in as I stepped off the bus, taking in the crisp air for as long as I could before we reached the big metal doors in front of us.
Mr. Tall and scary opened the door for us and I walked in, looking around to my surroundings.
The plain room had about 20 kids sitting around the walls, some on their own, some talking quietly with the people around them. I spotted the bathroom and made my way to it, subtly looking around to the people around me.
Some had visible injuries, a few with crutches next to them and even a girl in a wheelchair. Some looked perfectly normal. It didn't come as a surprise to see so many people with obvious injuries or disabilities, I guess that's what this place specialized in.
My vision was cut off as I pushed past the bathroom door. I hurriedly did my business then looked into the mirror as I washed my hands. My shoulder length light brown hair was slightly ruffled from the ride and darker circles surrounded my pale green eyes. I usually didn't sleep very well but the past 2 nights had been especially rough. I ran my fingers through my hair before stepping out of the bathroom and taking a seat by the wall.
