I'm not fond of author's notes and prefaces in stories anymore, but I think this story requires one.
This story is going to delve into mature subjects, including but not limited to sexuality, homophobia, mental illness, and substance abuse. If these are things you find triggering please note them now.
I wanted to write two stories that were apart of one life, and that's what this "book" is. We'll be going back and forth each chapter to a different time in the protagonist's life, past and present.
While writing I'm generally very influenced by music, and because it's such a huge part of my inspiration process it's been incorporated into the story. Because our characters are musicians I will be featuring songs that they have "written" in the chapter. None of the songs or the lyrics used in this book are mine, and I will make a note of the songs used in each chapter to paint the narrative picture at the end. That being said every song I include you should check out, because they're special to me and might help cement the setting or emotion of the chapter. Let me know if you want a playlist or something.
