The storm came the following night. Samantha gasped, her knuckles turning white as she held the sheets tightly as the ship rock vigorously from side to side. She had stayed locked in her cabin, during the course of the morning as the crew ran from one direction to the next preparing for the storm. She closed her eyes and swallowed the lump in her throat, trying not to empty her stomach. She couldn't light the candles and as she lay there in the dark, she started to see shadows, dancing around her. Shadows everywhere, lurking, watching her. Samantha blinked her eyes rapidly and pivot her head to where the window was framed into the wall, wishing that moon would be courageous enough to show its face. The chattering of her teeth had nothing to do with the chill in the air as her breathing grew uneven.
She didn't want to be alone anymore. The ship went up in the air then came back down heavily. Her heartbeat increased and she took steady breaths. "Stay calm, Samantha, you are going to be fine" as soon as she said the words, she was thrown from the bed. She groaned as she landed on the floor with a thud.
"Samantha!" The door swung opened and Smity entered with Tommy in his arms. Samantha pulled herself off the ground with the support of the bed and took Tommy in her arms. "Stay here with him!"
Samantha nodded. She watched Smity hastily hurried out the cabin, swaying ever so often before disappearing shutting the door behind him. Tommy was wet from Smity's drenched attire and Samantha quickly got him changed into some clothes, he had left in her cabin. They were soon laying hurdled together on the bed now listening to the pounding of the rain and clashing of the waves. "It's horrible Sammy, I hope the captain would be safe."
"He would be Tommy" Her arms tighten around him as she saw something in the cabin moved, she buried her face in his curls and a sob escape her lips. She hated the dark, wish this storm would be over, so she could light some candles. As she lay there, rocking on her bed, she wondered how the crew were faring. Were they hurt? She thought of the captain, getting swept away by the waves and a pain shot through her heart. Nothing would happen to Jake, of course, he was the captain. Right?
It was around midnight or very late in the night. Samantha was not sure, how many hours had passed when the raining finally stopped. The rocking remained but it wasn't as intense as before. She raised from the bed and took a look at Tommy sleeping soundly before venturing towards the door. Did Smity bolt it? Her question was answered when the door swung opened. It was eerie dark outside, for no lanterns were lit as to not cause a fire below.
That didn't stop her, taking a deep breath, she closed the door behind her and feel her way towards the entrance of the deck, trying ever so often to steady her balance. Her bare feet stepped in puddles of water as she began climbing the steps. Samantha stepped on the deck and was suddenly aware of her state of dress, her flimsy chemise dance around her body in the chilly night air.
The crew were too busy to notice her and she would use that as an advantage as to not returned to change.
The entire deck was soaked with unwanted seawater, some of the sails had gotten loose and tangled in the shrouds and rigging even around the masts. Samantha stood, hugging herself, looking for familiar faces, it was then she saw Julian, his hat had blown from his head and drifted to the other side of the ship. His attempt to grasp it was hindered as the ship rocked more intensely from side to side. Samantha's heart leapt to her throat as a monstrous wave, soar high above the ship before plundering on deck. She held onto the frame of the door until her fingers bled. Opening her eyes as she shivered from head to toe at the cold water that graze her skin, she notice the ship has lost a few men and.... Julian! Frantically her head swayed from left to right searching for the lad. Her eyes widen noticing the pale fingers trying to hold onto the ship's railing. "Julian!" Without thinking, Samantha ran to aid the boy.

Julian's feet dangled over the edge of the ship, his teeth clenched as he pulled himself up, hugging the railing to his chest. Over the roaring of the sea, and clashing of waves, he heard his name being called. But it wasn't any of the crew nor the captain. Julian eyes widen when he saw Samantha swaying towards him, she grasped a rope that was attached to one of the loose sails. "Samantha No!" He shook his head. "Let go of the rope!"
It was too late. The blustered wind swept through the deck and picked up the sails, taking Samantha along with it. "No!" Julian watched as she flew through the air and dropped into the sea, a wave choose that moment to cover her entire body. He was crying but no one could tell in the drizzling rain.
Smity came to him then, pulling him to safety. "Christ lad! Are you alright!!" Smity asked, watching as the boy entire body shook. He'll catch a cold if he didn't change his clothes.
"Sam..Samantha...Smity she's--" Smity shook the boy to look at him.
"What's wrong with Miss Wavery?" He held him by the collar. "I think you should go below, now!"
As he tried to drag the boy off, for his safety. Julian yelled.
"Samantha's in the water! She came to save me and--Look!" He pointed to golden hair and hands waving frantically out at sea. The waves were taking her more and more away from the ship. Smity's heartbeat increased with fright and panic. He knew he should have blotted the dam door!
"Oh lord give me strength!" Julian heard the first mate's prayer and he was released immediately. "Jake!" Smity's heart was pounding so loudly, he could hear it, as he ran up on the wheel deck where his captain was battling the storm. "Jake!"
Jake looked at his first mate, his pale and frighten expression mistaken for the brutality of the storm. "It's a dangerous one Smity! But it would be over soon! Help Remmy rescue the men that went overboard!" Jake ordered his eyes on his second mate pulling a crew member on deck.
The ship jerked giving Smity the advantage of grabbing the captain's lapels. "Jake, Samantha's in the water. She can't swim! Please you are the only great swimmer--"
Jake entire body suddenly grew numb. He looked around the body of waters surrounding him and saw that Smity was right. Samantha was trying her best to stay above the waves as she thrashes around frantically to stay above. Bloody hell why could she not just do as she was told and stay below! Jake was already pushing Smity out of the way and running down the steps. Smity followed him and held on to the railing as Jake disappeared in the water.

It was dangerous to swim during a storm. Jake cursed when he was forced under by another brutal wave. He held his breath and continue swimming before resurfacing for air. He did that several times each time, he felt like he was being pushed back further away from Samantha. A force stronger than him was trying to prevent him from saving her. His plastered hair on his forehead and shirt were seen as distractions, not having means to do away with his hair. He tore his shirt, banishing it off his body and dive below the waves where he continued to swim. Gasping for air, he removed the lingering water from his face and sighed when her screams became audible.
"Help!" Samantha cried her tears mixing with the beast that wanted to swallow her. She had done what, she knew. Don't drink any of the water, held her breath. The kicking of her feet was done in desperation and it seems to be working she was not going under. She was still alive. Her eyes blurred as she watched the ship, fading away. Her arms and feet were growing tired and the shivering of her body was getting intense. "Help?" She whispered. But who would come for her in such a gruesome weather? They probably thought her lost forever.
Samantha stopped her arms from moving then slowly her feet. She was through with putting off the inevitable. Her eyes slid close and before she was totally submerged by the water, she could have sworn she heard someone calling her name.
