I took a shaky breath as I watched Gideon stand in the center of the clearing. He is grinning ear to ear as he slips off his cloak revealing his dark clothes underneath. His gilded knife hanging off his belt at his side, glinting golden under the sunlight like his eyes. Gideon pushes his thick hair back before tilting his head with his crooked smile.
"You ready?" he asks excitedly.
Shiloh stands off to the side with Adrien who stares off into space with an annoyed look like always. Shiloh glances between Gideon and I with a wary look. "Gideon? Could you maybe... take it slow with her? It might be a shock."
I am trying to brace myself best I can for whatever he will do but all it's doing is scaring me. I take deep breaths through my mouth and out through my nose as a futile attempt to increase my calmness. My hands are beginning to shake from anticipation as I watch him drop his arms loosely at his sides.
"Yep," Gideon answers simply with a slight bob of his head.
I tense as I watch him edgily. A million thoughts rushing through my head. What can he do? What is he? I've wondered these thoughts many times before but I've recently learned knowing information isn't any better than being kept in the dark. Quite frankly, I'd rather remain in the dark than lose another part of my sanity.
But I can't turn back now.
Gideon points lazily to his eyes with a smirk. "Watch my eyes, Eve. The eyes are key to knowing if someone's using an ability."
"Though not everyone has it, it's just what usually happens," Adrien clarifies, flicking his wrist aimlessly.
"Just..." Shiloh winces, "don't freak out... I know I did..."
Great.
Gideon locks eyes with me with an intensity I've seen before. The warning looks he gave me in the beginning when he was threatening to kill me. I stiffen under his gaze forcing my legs to remain frozen. I am not afraid, I chant nervously to myself. But my heart begins to pound and my hands twitch anxiously.
I watch his eyes closly, searching for any change but for a moment, nothing happens. He raises his hand up into the air before swiftly bringing it down. Suddenly, his golden eyes flash like glass reflecting the rays of the sun. His pupils slit for a brief moment before he rolls his shoulders back and he transforms before my very eyes.
I nearly scream. Not from shock or surprise. From fresh, icy terror.
Gideon's teeth suddenly sharpened into wolf fangs. His eyes burning with sudden rage and his hands tightened into fists. He continues to grin darkly in my direction as I feel heat radiated from his skin. Smoke begins to rise from his clenched fists before he releases it suddenly. A plume of rusty gold fire explodes from his palms, scorching the ground and sending leaves up into the air before disintegrating into ash. Inside his skin, gold light spreads through his veins before splotching certain areas of his body and pulses around his hands. The three scars across his eyes light up from inside with golden light.
I didn't feel myself fall back onto the ground but I scramble backward, my hand smothering my frantic scream. I stare in horror as the fire clears revealing the remains of ash and smoke on the ground around him. Gideon standing among the ashy remains as tiny embers flutter through the air. He takes heavy breaths as he remains standing tall. The rusted gold markings spread across his skin again as if the lights were alive.
Shiloh curses loudly as he drops his head into his hands. He continues to mumble in their language before saying in English, "Gets me every time."
Gideon pauses before letting his body relax. His animalistic eyes scanning the burnt clearing before looking back at me. I jerk back suddenly as he opens his mouth revealing a set of wolf's teeth. His eyes widen slightly as if he were taken aback by me. He swallowed before closing his mouth again. He gives Shiloh and Adrien a nervous look, "Was it really that bad?"
