"For what you said or what you did?"
"Fletch I don't think you're not good enough for me" she laughed nervously "I don't know why I said it. If anything it's the other way round. I'm bad news Fletch, you don't deserve that"
He nodded slowly "and as for what you did?"
"I....Er ... look Fletch we are friends. We are good friends. I told Evie that your friendship means a great deal to me and that's why we can't be together, I don't want to lose that. To ruin everything" she'd been looking at her hands placed in her lap, looking up she saw again the pain in his eyes
"I don't want to hurt you Fletch"
"Too late" he mumbled barely audible
"It took balls for me to say what I said yesterday. And I know that you agreed. I know that you care Jac, even you are not as good an actor as that. I get why you're scared but I'm not all the others. Did you form a bond with them for over a year before getting together with them? Had you been shot or come close to dying numerous times? Did they sit with you everyday? Did you infuriate each other incessantly?"
Jac sat speechless
"You didn't answer when I asked if you were sorry that we kissed. I think it was inevitable because there is something more than friendship there whether you choose to ignore it or not"
"We're just friends Fletch. We just forgot ourselves and got carried away in the moment until I came to my senses"
He ran his fingers through his hair, "I'm not buying it Jac"
"I'm sorry, it's all I can offer . I am truly sorry for saying you weren't good enough because actually you're amazing"
She got up and ran out aware that she was going to cry and not wanting to cry in front of him.
She hurried back to the sanctuary of her own office, tears stinging her eyes.
This was such a mess. Of course she agreed with him, of course they should be more than friends but she was trying to do the right thing. She was toxic and he didn't deserve to be infected by that and she couldn't take that chance, even if that meant that she missed out on something incredible.
If she could still have his friendship then at least she had a little bit of him which was better than nothing. They just had to get over this awkwardness and learn to work with each other again and hopefully rebuild that friendship
