nine months before the storm.
“let’s get those!” jasper shouted, as he pointed to the vanilla oreos.
i told him to be quiet because he was being loud, and he pouted. he pouted.
“but they look so good,” he moaned.
“my mom wants milk and eggs. we’re getting milk and eggs,” i said sternly as if i was talking to a kid.
he playfully glared at me and flicked my nose while i was walking. i jumped in surprise and ran into the banana stand, knocking over a few.
“damn you,” i whispered, picking up the bananas that fell.
he laughed so loud, i bet everyone looked. i didn’t know because after i picked up the last one, i ran out of there as fast as i could, and i could still hear his laughter.
“valerie?” i heard him, but it sounded far away.
cereal aisle… bread aisle… junk food aisle…
“valerie?” i heard him again, louder, as i ran towards the dairy products.
i heard his voice continue to shout my name and as soon as i saw the milk, i grabbed it, but a hand reached out and grabbed my hand, which caused me to scream.
“my ears!” jasper complained, as he stuck a finger in his ear and moved it around.
i laid a hand on my chest and tried to control my heavy breathing.
“you… ” i said, out of wind. he patted me on the back after he ‘got his hearing back’.
“well, now that i found you, let’s go checkout,” he said, gesturing to the basket he carried that had a gallon of milk, and a carton of eggs.
i glared at him and flipped him off. he smirked in return and walked away towards the checkout counters.
when we were nearing the checkout counters, i spotted a package of vanilla oreos. i looked between jasper, and the oreos.
i run to grab them at last minute and when i put them on the counter, he looked at me, smiling.
“so i can have them?” he asks.
“yeah,” i mumble, “you can have them, you big baby.”
his smile turns into a grin, and he gives me a bone-crushing hug.
that idiot, i thought. but, he’s my idiot nonetheless.
