Since the judge left her stand, everyone went outside for a break. I cannot imagine what Ethan and Aiden are going through right now. I know their Father caused them pain and misery, but he will always be their Dad. Ethan still has two months of recovery left and its been a slow one. Aiden seems to be holding it together, but I can still see the pain in his eyes. Once this is over, I know we will all have the closure we need.
"Excuse me, the judge is ready," a police man shouts at us.
This is it. Its time to know his punishment. If only he could be locked up for life. Everyone makes it back inside and up the stairs to the court room, as we fill the room again. The jury talk among themselves. Everyone is waiting for his sentence. Three police officers walk Mr. Jacob back in the court room, to his seat. All eyes are on him.
"Have you reached a verdict?" The judges asks glancing over at the jury.
"We have, your Honor," the jury foreperson replied.
"What say you?" The judge asked.
"We the jury, in the case of the Phoenix versus Mr. Jacob find the defendant guilty of the charge of attempting murder and voluntary manslaughter," the jury replied.
"Mr. Jacob please rise. I now sentence you to life with parole, with the minimum of 20 years. With good behavior, 15 years with life of parole," the judge explained.
"Thank you jury, for your service today. Court is adjourned." The judge said as she banged her gavel and disappeared.
We all glance at each other with a smile on our face, knowing we will not have to deal with Jacob for a long time. Relief over come us.
"Let's go home," Dad said as we begin to stand up. I definitely need a break from this place. The was back home was quiet. We arrived back home and everyone changed clothes, as Mom put on a roast.
"Halley, could you help me in the kitchen please?" Mom asked me.
"Yes ma'am, what can I do to help?" I replied.
"Cut up some carrots and potatoes please," Mom stated as she handed me the cutting board.
For awhile I cut up vegetables for dinner, while Mom and I sing and dance. Moments like this I wish they could last forever. I always dreamed of us cooking together.
"What you two cooking? Can I help?" Bailey asked, not knowing she interrupt my thoughts.
"Actually, were done now," I pointed out.
"Actually, no were not done. You two go clean up and meet me outside," Mom insisted.
"Is everything okay?" Bailey asked.
"Of course, I just want to talk. That's all." Mom exclaimed.
Bailey and I run upstairs and wash ourselves. We both put another outfit on and wash our hands. After five minutes, we walk outside where Mom is sitting at the table. There is a beautiful sunset setting down pass the trees, with a cool breeze blowing leaves around. Mom made us each a glass of her famous sweet tea.
"Don't be worried, but I have to tell you both something," Mom paused. A long pause that causes me to wonder the worst.
"Before I came up pregnant with you two, I had another baby. It was a boy. I was excited to be a Mom, since I was having a hard time trying to have one. The doctors always told me how healthy he was, until he was born. He was born with a hole in his heart. I was sure the good Lord above would take him home. Months past, and nothing changed. Your Father and I was so scared. His name was Mitchell. He was the happiest baby ever. When Mitchell made eight months old, he passed away in his sleep. So when I came up pregnant with twins, I didn't know what to expect. I was still grieving over Mitchell, so your Father and I agreed to separate you two. I pushed your Father away, because all I wanted was my baby. So I took Bailey and your Father took you, Halley. I was only thinking of myself and my happiness, instead of what was best for my daughters. I love you two with all my heart and I don't want anymore secrets between us. I'm sorry." Mom explained as she leaned in for a hug.
"Why didn't you ever tell us?" Bailey asked.
"We're not five anymore Mom, were 17 now," I explained.
"I was waiting for the right time. Please I never meant to hurt neither one of you," Mom cried.
"We're not mad, just hurt you didn't tell us sooner. I know we have been through a lot, but I know we could of handled it," Bailey exclaimed.
"I promise, no more secrets," Mom cried.
I cannot imagine what Mom went through. Of course she needs to be happy, and that's all I want for her. But my mind won't stop from wondering what it would be like, with an older brother. Ethan and Aiden try to act like our brothers, but their only our cousin. Family is family. It bothers me that Dad never said anything about it.
"Hey Dad, can I ask you something?" I asked, as I walked into Dad's office.
"Sure boo, what is it?" Dad replied.
"Mom just told Bailey and I that we had an older brother once. Why didn't you ever tell me?" I exclaimed.
" I wanted your Mother to be the one to tell you one day," Dad exclaimed.
"I would of never saw Mom if it wasn't for that vacation. If we never saw her again, would you tell me?" My blood was pumping now. I was angry at him."I would tell you when you got older, or see your Mother another time," Dad said walking towards me.
"Wait till I'm older? And hide it longer from me? Or when you decided to see Mom again? You waited 16 years and still did not contact her! How long were you going to wait?" I can feel my face burning red and my fist are clenched up. He was not worried about how I felt all these years, only what he wanted.
"Halley. Please! Let me..." before Dad could finish, I shouted a "NO!" And ran out the house. I was furious. Why do parents think its okay to keep secrets like that from us?
Without a second thought, I ran out the back door, and grabbed my keys. I started the engine and pealed out the driveway. I have always had a bad temper, but not this bad. I drove to my favorite spot, the park. I sat in the car for a minute and jumped out. I walked over to the swings and started swinging myself. I close my eyes and imagine I am flying, without a care in the world.
"Halley, is that you?" A voice calls out.
