Chapter 8- Girlfriend
I walked home accompanied by Alma, who I found out was my next door neighbor. Of course she lived waaay down the road, but there were no houses between us. I let myself in, dropping my bag and climbing the stairs to my room. I was welcomed by yet another note sitting on my desk.
Heya babe, look after Nathan for me looking for a nanny for him. Also, ignore Gracie, we broke up and she's gonna try and bad mouth me.
-Dad
Wow, last time I checked they had only been together like, three days. But then again, I'm not surprised, if my dad's track record is anything to go by. I changed into some pajama shorts and an oversized tee-shirt and went in search of Nathan. He was sitting in his room on the floor staring at the toy box. "Do you want to see what's inside?" I bent down to sit with him, he barely glanced up at me but I saw his finger twitch, pointing towards the box. I smiled, he's getting a lot better at expressing himself. Leaning toward the toy box, I began remembering the way the Jordan's hazel eyes made contact with mine. I'm sure I saw them linger on me for a second too long.
Who am I kidding? He didn't seem to be like most of the other boys, surely he wouldn't check me out while he had his girlfriend sitting on his lap? Or maybe, if he was he was just staring at my butt or something, that's what most of the boys were doing.
I spent most of my afternoon playing with Nathan and entertaining him in the best way I could. Dealing with an autistic kid wasn't easy. Nathan barely ever realized I was there and when he did he would never talk. Some days he would grab and pull my hair to get my attention and I'll tell you this, it hurt. A lot.
By about seven o'clock Dad still wasn't home, so I decided I should make myself and Nathan some dinner. As it turns out, he didn't have any cooks or cleaners, the only staff he had was Thomas. I'm guessing it was because he was almost never home and was always out with some girl or the other. I'm not the world's best cook but I can do a bit without setting the kitchen on fire. After looking thought the cupboards I realized staff wasn't the only thing Dad didn't have, there was no food anywhere!
I was so stressed out and I began to panic, if there was no food, how was I supposed to make food? I don't know anything about ordering food here, I don't even know any numbers! My eyes began to sting as a few tears slid down my face. Before I knew it I was in tears, sobbing and panicking. I never thought I would say this but more than anything, I wanted my Daddy. But he never even gave me his number so I can't contact him.
I began scrolling through my phone until Chrissie's name popped up on my screen. I sent up a silent thank you and called her, trying to hide the sadness in my voice. "Hey bombshell, what's up?" I could almost hear the frown on her face. I coughed and began explaining my situation. Chrissie listened the whole time and didn't interrupt once. When I finally finished talking, Chrissie seemed to have come up with a plan. "Okay, stay there and don't move a muscle, we're coming over." I was confused.
"We? Who's we? And how do you know where I live?" While Chrissie's plan was designed to make me feel better, it only caused me more worry. By the time I had finished bombarding her with questions, Chrissie had already ended the call and, I'm assuming was on her way to see me.
The doorbell rang, pulling me out of my thoughts. I groaned and began skulking towards the door, Alma and Chrissie welcomed themselves in carrying grocery bags full of stuff. Thank god they didn't order takeaway because Nathan won't eat junk food.
"So you live here by yourself, huh?" Alma said, checking the open plan living room and kitchen out. I wasn't sure if I wanted to tell them about Nathan, I hate people feeling sorry for me.
"Uh... well, no, my dad lives here too." I stalled, still at war with myself about weather or not to tell them. Chrissie rolled her eyes and snorted in a way that would be gross on anyone else. Her kind of edgy look worked well with any form of attitude.
"What we were asking, Genius is if you have any siblings." I panicked a little, unsure as to what to do, when Nathan walked in. He stared at Alma and Chrissie and they stared at him. I stood with my eyes wide, surprised to see him out of his room. He didn't seem to like the house and it was really hard work getting him out of either his room or mine. An awkward laugh escaped from my lips, "I guess that answers your question then."
It turns out Chrissie and Alma brought ingredients for spaghetti so we ate a delicious dinner while Nathan stared at them, but he ate. I can't tell if he likes them or not. Neither of them asked why he didn't talk, even though I know that they wanted to. I was lying on my bed with Nathan watching Adventure Time on my laptop. It was Nathan's favourite show and, even though I deny it, I absolutely love it. Dad stormed into the house followed by a giggling woman. Oh jeez, don't tell me he's drunk.
I knew he was drunk when I heard him stumbling up the stairs in the dark, it was nearly eleven PM and he got home from clubbing, I assumed. I heard the woman squeak as he picked her up and carried her into his room.
I lay awake all night whilst Nathan slept peacefully next to me. So many thoughts circled through my head while I stared at the ceiling, most of them revolving around Jordan. Something about the way he looked at me made my stomach flip.
I think I have a crush.
"Summer, this is Yasmina, my girlfriend." I sighed and rolled my eyes as Dad introduced me to his next fling. Girlfriend was the wrong word entirely. Yasmina stood giving me a false plastic smile that didn't quite meet her eyes. I gave her a smile, dripping with sarcasm and went to get ready for school
Why did I never run into Gracie last night like Dad predicted?
