As Martha opened her eyes this Saturday morning, she sat up in bed and looked out the window of her room. Today was a special day, but she just couldn't remember why. When Ruthie came in to help her get dressed she would ask her. Ruthie was her favorite nurse and knew everything that was going on in the nursing home.
Martha picked up the hand held mirror on the beside table. She saw the reflection of an old lady. She had thinning gray hair cut very short. She looked at her face. She had bags under her eyes and lines of wrinkles. Her arms were flabby. Her hands wrinkled. It was hard for her to walk and needed a wheelchair most of the time. She could go on and on about her old lady imperfections but was startled by a young woman in a white uniform standing in front of her.
"I didn't hear you come into the room. Who are you?"
"My name is Angelica. You can call me Angel for short. I'm new here." Angelica looked at the chart attached to Martha's bed. She scanned it quickly. Martha, age 98, Diagnosis: Dementia, Hard of Hearing, Birthday December 20.
"Martha, today is a very special day for you. Once a month the nursing home celebrates all the patients birthdays that fall in the month. Today is December 15th and even though your real birthday is 5 days away it will be celebrated today. There are 4 other ladies and 1 man who will also be celebrating their December birthdays today. All you have to do is make a wish before you blow out your candles and your wish will come true."
But Martha interrupted, "It's not really my birthday today."
"There is a criteria to be followed for what we call an unbirthday birthday wish."
1. " Birthday can be celebrated on any day but must be in the month of your birthday."
2. " Someone must sing Happy Birthday to You."
3. " You must make a wish before blowing out the candles."
4. " Never ever tell anyone what the wish was or it won't come true."
"Do you think you can do that, Martha?"
"Yes, I can. I'll start thinking of what I want to wish for right now. Are you going to help me get dressed for breakfast."
"No, your regular nurse will be in shortly. My job here is done." She crossed off Martha's name from her list and left as quickly as she had arrived.
