Martha cautiously walked out of her bedroom door. No one was in the corridor so she started walking. Round the bend she saw nurse Ruthie coming straight at her. Martha threw her hood over her head and nervously kept walking. Ruthie went right pass her without giving her a look. Martha breathed a sigh of relief. She turned around and saw Ruthie going in her bedroom. Martha hurried up and ran into the lobby. She opened the front door but the alarm sounded.
Henry the door guard ran over to her. She was so close to freedom.
''Sorry ma'am if the alarm frightened you. We keep the alarm on at all times. Sometimes the patients get confused and try to open the main door. Wait till I shut off the alarm. Okay, you can open the door now. Have a nice day ma'am."
Martha gave him a slight wave and walked out the door. She didn't want to leave because of mistreatment. Everyone there was very nice to her. She had a lot of friends there. She was leaving because the nursing home was a place for old people.
As she stepped into freedom she wondered where she should go. She couldn't go to any of her children's houses as she was now younger than they were. They just wouldn't understand. She looked down the street and realized she was just a few blocks from her home. She crossed her fingers and hoped her children didn't sell it. She wanted to go home.
It was starting to snow lightly so Martha started walking faster. She didn't have on any snow boots on and wanted to get home before the snow got heavy.
She stood in front of her house afraid to try the door. Was it still hers or did her children sell it? She walked up to the front door and tried to open it. The door was locked. She looked under the rock where she used to keep a spare key but found none. She rang the doorbell. No one answered which was a good sign. Then Martha remembered to check her coat pocket. Her house key was still in her winter coat pocket. Martha opened the door with the key and was surprised to see what she found inside.
