everyone knows that when you turn 16 you can't talk to your soulmate by writing on your arm. whatever you wrote, your soulmate could see. katie holt had written to her soulmate once... but never got a reply. she never understood why so she figured she didn't have one. she never wrote again. till one day when she just felt sad. after her brother and father disappeared in space, she fell into a depression. she had just seen the tv and ran up to her room. she laid in her bed, the moonlight she laid there and silently cried. she needed someone to talk to. but not her mom. her mom was just as hurt.

katie sat up and grabbed a marker from her nightstand.

"Hey, I don't know if you'll reply to this... or if you even exist but... I need someone to talk to. my brother and father just disappeared on the Kerberos mission and I have no one to talk to so... whether I have a soulmate or not... I just need to talk... so, if you're there... please talk to me."

she read over what she just wrote and watched... and watched... and watched... nothing. she let tears slip from her eyes but then she glowed blue. her message disappeared and a new one appeared. she sat up nearly falling off the bed as she read the note.

"hi... I'm so sorry about your family... was your brother's name matt?"

"Yeah..." she wrote back.

"he was my friend at the garrison... you're his sister?"

"yeah... do I know you?"

"no, but matt always talked about you... Katie right?"

"Yeah but you can call me pidge. matt always called me pidge because I apparently reminded him of a pigeon."

"well, it's nice to meet you pidge... I'm sorry about a few years back... I didn't answer your message. I was a little nervous."

"It's okay. I was nervous too."

"oh... so tell me about your self."

"what do you want to know?"

"I don't know... do you think we meet tomorrow to talk?"

"Ummm... sure. but how close are you to the garrison?"

"I live by the park across town from the garrison."

"perfect I'll meet you there at... 9?"

pidge looked at the message one last time before falling back against her wall. she was hurt and crying. slowly she got up and walked into Matt's room. she laid on his bed and let tears drip from her eyes. she missed him.

flashback

"ah"8-year-old pidge screamed.

matt came running into her room.

"Katie are you okay?" he asked looking at the small child under the blanket.

thunder erupted outside, causing her to yell again. matt laughed and picked pidge up. he was 16 years old so he was rather clumsy when he carried her into his room and cuddled her close.

"matt... what's that?" pidge asked pointing at his arm.

"oh that? is my soulmate talking to me," he said

"what's a soulmate?"

"Well um... it's like a best friend but more," he smiled at her, "it's the one person in the world that knows you better than anyone else. it's someone who makes you a better person... actually they don't make you a better person...you do that your self... because they inspire you," Matt looked back at his arm, "a soulmate is someone who you can carry with you forever. it's the one person who knows you and accepts and believes in you before anyone else did... even when no one else would." Matt smiled at pidge who smiled back.

"do I have one?!" she asked

"of course... everyone does. a soulmate is someone you're meant to be with forever."

"will they be pretty?"

" oh pidge," Matt laughed, "everyone's beautiful in their own way."

pidge smiled and looked at the message on Matt's arm.

"will you sing me a song?"

"sure, in fact, a friend just taught me a new one. he plays the guitar."

"those hardest to love need it most,"

pidge snapped back to reality as the sun crept into Matt's room. she had fallen asleep on his bed. she got up and looked at her arm.

"hey are you still up for meeting at the park later?"

Pidge wrote back that she was and got up and ready. she put on a green crop top and ripped black shorts. she put on and knee high socks and black shoes before walking out of the house. she walked downtown to a cafe and got a black coffee with ice. she continued her walk to the park and looked around. she was half an hour early so she could sit for a while. she sat down on a bench close to someone playing the guitar. he started a new song and pidge recognized the first line.

play the song

"those hardest to love, need  it most."

pidge looked at the boy sitting close to her. he continued the song and she joined in singing.

"I watched our bodies turned to ghosts."

pidge watched him until the song ended.

"Hello," he said noticing pidge.

"Ah... hi," Pidge said after jumping out of her trans.

"My name's lance what's yours?" he asked

"uh, k-Katie."

lance stopped for a second and smiled.

"wow, your way more beautiful than Matt ever described you to be."

katie looked at lance for a second then it hit her. she was sitting next to her soul mate... holy shit. he was handsome.
