“Hi Greg.” I breathed out, “Just calling for my update-” “How are you sweetie?” He cut me off, concern lacing his voice. “It's only been a day, less than that in fact.” I chuckled lightly. “I'm alright ... I am. It'll take a little getting used to is all, but I'm fine, you said you wouldn't worry..” “Sorry, I know... I can't help it sometimes .... I know you'll be fine” he sighed. “I will be... Is there anything new Greg?” I heard some movement and some mumbles from the other end of the phone before a voice addressed me again. “Allo Kit-Kat” “Oh Bird!-” a smile instantly spreading across my face at the sound. “It's weird not having you around y'know. Everyones missing you. Even though you could be a pain” He chuckled. “Wow thanks mate” I replied sarcastically, rolling my eyes, though he couldn't see me.
“Has there been anything Jay? Anything at all?” I asked again, not having received an answer from Greg. I heard him take in a deep breath. Oh no... “Jay.... what is it?” He sighed before replying to me. “Well, the day you came to the agency, the day you left... you know we sent a crew out to your house? Well by the time they'd gotten there....” “Spit it out..” I was getting frustrated, I hated when people dragged things out like this. “Okay ... well your place was broken into, um, before we got there. Nothing taken of course .. but it was trashed, like they were looking for something.... um...” “It was Peterson's people wasn't it? .... Jay was there something else? ....” By now Nathan had lifted from lying on the bed and was sat on the armchair next to me. He stared at the ground in front of him and twiddled his thumbs, waiting to hear what had happened.
“ ... Um.. there was a note ... left, on Nathan's bedroom door, I don't think they were watching you right then Kat .... They hadn't known you left .... They-” “They were making the move, if we were still there they would have taken him then .... Jay?” Nathan was looking at me now, worry filling his eyes. “.. I- ... yeah, they were looking for him Kit-Kat” I let out a small shaky breath. So now they knew we'd gone, knew we'd fled. But if they weren't watching us from the house then they probably won't be able to find us ... right? ... And what if we'd left it, just stayed another hour, maybe even just a couple of minutes ... He would've been taken, attacked, gone. And what now another note? Why waste time?, why warn us like that? ... They had something planned, something we couldn't see yet ...
“Bird .... what'd the note say?” “It said 'We told you not to run and not to hide. You think we'll never find you, we will, we're on the trail' ... There was nothing else Kat ... no other evidence, we don't know who was there, how many were there...” he trailed off “Jay ... Jay, my neighbour, Mrs.Collins, the one I've told you about ... c'mon she must have seen something, anything..” “Kat we tried, but nothing, she claimed not to know anything, we couldn't push her. And she looked kinda worried and scared at the fact there was a bunch of strange men she didn't know in your house .... She can't be dragged into this more ... it won't help” I breathed out again, leaning back on the sofa and rubbing my face with my free hand. Nathan was quiet. He'd returned his gaze to the floor, simply listening to my side of the conversation.
“He's there?” “Yeah ... he is...” “Give him the phone Kat” “Huh? Why?” “Let me talk to him please just for a minute...” I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion but did what I was told. I reached out my hand to Nathan, who looked at the phone and then to me, with similar confusion on his face. “It's Jay” I whispered lightly. He nodded. “Hello, Jay..”
I watched Nath as he spoke to Jay. His end of the conversation mostly consisting of “Hmm” “Yeah” “Sure” “No” and a chuckle here and there. What the heck could he say to make him happy at a time like this? He looked at me smiling for a second “Yeah, yeah she is..” and looked away again. “Stop talking about me” I yelled so Jay could hear too, hearing his booming laugh on the other end and Nathan chuckling in front of me ... Well at least he was smiling... He turned serious again before ending the call “Alright, I know I will...” and hung up handing my phone back to me.
We stayed sitting opposite each other for a couple of minutes, not saying a word. Not knowing what to say... “You okay?” I said in a voice quieter than I intended. He looked up and nodded but then shrugged. “I guess, It's not really a surprise though right? ... It's not like we come here and everything turns out right automatically ... Should've expected it ....” he trailed off. I was going to say something before he rushed in with another comment “Sorry about your house getting trashed...” He looked up again, showing that familiar worried face that I'd seen so much lately. I hated that face. I stood up, frustrated with the fact he was apologising again and whacked him across the head with a cushion from the sofa. His eyes widened as he looked up at me standing in front of him, looking annoyed and confused. “What the fuck d'you do that for?” I hit him again. “Don't ever apologise again for anything that happens, I want to frickin' slap you when ever you do”
I went to hit him again but he caught the cushion and threw it back on the sofa. “Well I am sorry, I don't care if that annoys you or not ... It was my fault...” He stood up and started walking away from me back towards the bed.
Ugh.... I slapped him in the back of the head and he turned around looking even more annoyed. Maybe even angry. “Would you stop fucking hitting me, you wierdo.” “No not till you stop saying sorry.” He sighed and turned back to the bed again. Sitting at the end and pulling off his jacket before laying down, staring at the ceiling above. I rolled my eyes...probably best to just leave it for now... “What were you talking about to Jay?” I changed the subject, though I really did want to know what they talked about. He chuckled lightly and closed his eyes, laying for a few second before answering. “Hah .. um ... no he was just telling me what had happened back in London and stuff” “What and you were laughing at that? You feeling all right.” He smiled and turned his head to look at me “No.. no .. I was laughing at the fact he told me; although you're a bitch sometimes and can irritate someone to the point of wanting to rip your head off ... you're a good person .... you're just putting up a shield and to not take everything so seriously-” He smiled wider “Oh he also said you've got a thing for me.... so...” I stood with my eyes widened at his statement. “He didn't really-” He just nodded still smiling. “Oh the little bastard, I am going to kill him” I yelled and reached my phone about to call him and absolutely go ape shit on him..
“Woah now-” Nathan had left the bed and was now standing in front of me holding my phone in the air. He stifled laughter. “He didn't... he didn't say that.... just the first part about you being a good person” I glowered at him as he stood before me grinning still with my phone. “You- ... ugh .... phone .... gimme” He handed it to me and I went over to sit on the sofa again, Nath following and sitting next to me. “You're blushing again...” he whispered. He lifted a hand and ran it along my now rosy cheeks. I involuntarily shuddered at his touched and pulled away, which made him chuckle. “Stop Nath, we're not doing this...” I went to grab the TV remote off the coffee table, being stopped by Nathan grabbing my wrist and forcing me to look at him, a smirk forming on his lips. “Don't push me away.” He tilted his head slightly “Unless you don't honestly want this...” I just stared at him. His eyes having the same hypnotising effect they always had on me. He leaned closer, watching me closely to see if I'd pull away. I didn't. He still held my wrist loosely in his right hand and put his left on my waist pulling me closer to him. Our noses just touched and he let out another small chuckle before closing the space between us and our lips touched, softly. I found myself trying to get closer to him, wrapping my arm around his neck. I lifted my other arm around him once he loosened his grip on my wrist. Our lips moved in sync and the kiss was getting heated. After what seemed like an eternity, we pulled away from each other, him resting his forehead against mine.
It was wrong, we shouldn't have done it, especially not now, after what's happened. My career could be jeopardized by such a simple act. A kiss. I didn't care though, not anymore. It had taken me a while but I found I could admit it now. I knew what I wanted. I wanted him.
